3 day school trip, Mon to Wed this week

DS is going on a 3 day school trip from Mon to Wed this week - it's an outdoor activity trip, and involves an hour and a half journey on the motorway. It seems to be going ahead, but I'm worrying about it.

What do people think? Would you send your child, or would you keep them at home?

Mine is away with the Scouts for a week.

Better outdoors than indoors.

Confused Not according to government and NHS advice, the advice is stay indoors.

FlippertyGibberts · 17/07/2022 19:37

I don't mind not getting my money back.

I'd keep them home, it'll be hellish in this heat. Ask them!!!

If you want to keep them home and your answers look like you do, then do it. Who cares what folk online say?

Well, I'm undecided I suppose!

DS would be happy enough not to go actually 😄, but I'm trying not to factor that in.

Why not, do you usually ignore him?

FayeGovan · 17/07/2022 19:47

@FlippertyGibberts would you like to do 3 days outdoor activities in nearly 40 degrees🙄

FlippertyGibberts · 17/07/2022 19:49

😄 no and no, but then DS says a lot of things about a lot of activities and then enjoys them.

If your DS doesn't want to go then there's your answer surely

dreamingbohemian · 17/07/2022 19:53

Sorry x-post

What I mean is if you're really undecided then give DS the final call

Well, he already didn't want to go particularly...

How sensible and independent is your child? My DC went on a school trip in year 8 and came back with severe sunburn and heatstroke.

I think the teachers and I were planning on a certain level of maturity and independence around drinking enough water, applying suncream and wearing a hat that, it turned out, my child didn't have.

TinaYouFatLard · 17/07/2022 20:03

I can’t believe the hysteria over this heat. I am
in Florida with the DCs right now and we have just come in from three hours in a high ropes/tree trekking course. We dressed lightly and drank loads of water. We all survived and it’s currently 35 degrees.

Kids have missed enough because of hysterical adults.

DD is at her outdoor pursuits holiday club tomorrow and Tuesday, I've asked about how they will cope with the heat and they've advised they will be doing bushcraft in the wooded area which is completely shaded and stays nice and cool, will be playing in the river when they feel warm and have extra tents, gazebos and shaded sections set up for lunch and to store their stuff.

The staff will have thought about the heat and put in place activities that are suitable to keep themselves and the kids comfortable.

Obviously make sure they have long sleeved lightweight tops, plenty of sun cream, a refillable bottle and a hat to keep themselves hydrated and protected from sunburn.

Littlefucker · 17/07/2022 20:09

No I wouldn’t send him and I’m surprised a school trip is happening in a declared national emergency. I got heatstroke when I was at school - it was hellish.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 17/07/2022 20:12

Where are they going? Not all of the uk is is the level 4 emergency.

The outdoor education place that our kids have been to have lots of covered activities (the riding, high ropes swimming pool, etc), den building is in the forest so they would be in the shade for lots of their trip.

Based in that, I’d be happy for my dc to go but you know where yours is off to and it might be very different

In a level 4 area. Lots of us are not in level 4 areas. The UK is a big place.

FlippertyGibberts · 17/07/2022 20:15

It's within a level 4 area.

It’s not going to be 35 degrees. It’s going to be 38-41 depending on where you are.

I'm surprised as well, although I can see it would be a difficult decision to make.
