Period swimsuits

Copying my comment on another thread that seems to have fizzled out, please can someone explain his period swim suits work?

I'm picturing a built in absorption pad - like period knickers have. But when you go swimming, doesn't the absorption area just fill with water? And won't you come out with a sodden, heavily water logged undercarriage? And won't the blood end up washing out if the padded area into the pool much like when you actually wash them?

If you've found this page in search of swimwear that has been tried and tested by fellow Mumsnet users, you might find our guide to the best swimsuits for women useful. Hope this helps! MNHQ

I assumed they were just for wearing about on the beach or whatever but not actual swimming

Yodaisawally · 17/07/2022 17:48

Following as I don't understand it either. Can't see how it would work in and out of a pool / the sea on holiday

deedledeedledum · 17/07/2022 17:57

The other thread had people recommending them for a dd who didn't use tampons but wanted to swim. So definitely meant for getting in the water. I really want to know how they work!!!

Following too! They sound good but I can't imagine how it won't just wash out in the pool?! But DD will likely have her period on holiday 😫

ramonaquimby · 17/07/2022 18:02

Yeah I can’t see how they work. swim nappies don’t hold in urine despite their great absorbency claims. period swimwear claims are modern day example of the emperor’s new clothes

I've never seen swim nappies making"great absorbency claims".

I assume with period swimwear, it's tight around the leg holes and waterproof gusset so water doesn't get in to "wash" the blood into the pool. But I have not tried them.

hotdog74 · 17/07/2022 18:14

As I understand it they are made of waterproof material. As long as it fits snugly, then the water stays out and the blood is absorbed by the pad inside. They are completely different to swim nappies etc. I don't think they an cope with very heavy flow, but as long as the absorbency of the pad matches your flow and you have it fitting tightly then you don't need any other protection so can be a good option for teens etc.

Bells3032 · 17/07/2022 18:18

Swim nappies don't make absorbancey claims. In fact the opposite. They don't absorb. That's the whole point. They're just there for the poop

Noodledoodledoo · 17/07/2022 18:19

I am with you but I have a pair of bikini bottoms and they work - its woowoo magic as far as my understanding! I only bought them due to a badly timed period and holiday and I wore them under my swimsuit, couldn't justify £60 for a swimsuit for a few days a month!

We were in the pool a lot and I didn't have any embarrassing moments and when rinsed out definitely evidence they were needed!

Amazing. I really want to know how!! I mean, if they absorb blood then they are going to absorb water surely. And to make them tight enough that water doesn't get in they would have to be uncomfortable 😳 like impossible to wear tight. Water gets in everywhere when you swim!!

BiscoffSundae · 17/07/2022 18:39

I’d be too worried to even attempt to wear them 😣

ChandlersDad · 17/07/2022 18:41

I have some on order for me and Dd. Badly timed holiday means I’m pretty much on the whole fucking week, so I’ll give them a go.

Grumpybutfunny · 17/07/2022 18:45

For those going on holiday period stop tablets might be a better option

somewhereovaryrainbow · 17/07/2022 18:48

Why don't you email a couple of companies that make them and ask? They're quite new and I'm sure they'll be delighted to explain their technology to you

hotdog74 · 17/07/2022 18:53

As I said up thread, it is because the material they are made of is waterproof. As long as they do not gape around the legs, arm holes or neck then the water does not get in as it cannot go through the material. Also the blood cannot escape out of the material and is absorbed in the pad in the same way as with period underwear. This is the explanation that I have seen given by the manufacturers on their websites etc.

deedledeedledum · 17/07/2022 18:54

I have looked online and all the manufactures say is that they are made in layers to seal the blood and prevent leaking. But then in the laundry the blood is released? How? How does the blood stay in the pants in pool water but then magically get released In sink water or a washer? How does the blood go straight into the pants and not swish out the side?

OP posts:
hotdog74 · 17/07/2022 19:00

The blood is released in the laundry because you swill them out in water once you take them off. When you're wearing them there is no water other than the blood inside the swim suit so the pad absorbs in just the same way as period pants worn in the dry; the pad is only moist from period blood while you're wearing it and the pad is designed to absorb the blood so it feels dry next to your skin. The blood is not released until you swill it with water once you've taken them off.

ShrillSiren22 · 17/07/2022 19:05

I’ve seen them and cannot work out how they could possibly work. I came on my period surfing once and managed to leak through a shortie 5mm wetsuit. There is no way in hell I’d be trusting enough of a tiny piece of material like that to hold it in.

Noodledoodledoo · 17/07/2022 19:38

Mine aren't excessively tight and I am plus size, just felt like normal bikini pants, I only put them under my normal swimsuit as I don't wear bikinis!

Thebeastofsleep · 17/07/2022 20:53

Mine do work. I don't know how. They absolutely definitely get wet and soak up sea water. I had visions of getting out the sea with watery blood running down my legs, but nope, not a dribble. Amazing things.

Honestly must be wizardry!

mum2jakie · 17/07/2022 20:56

Never heard of these before! Does anyone have a link to a brand they would recommend?

We never bothered with a swim nappy for that reason.
We could tell if DD was working up to a poop and would whisk her out and into a towel.

MinglingFlamingo · 17/07/2022 21:19

I have some period bikini bottoms. Basically they have a lot of padding in the crutch then you add a pad shaped sponge thing for extra protection. I then wear a pair of larger bikini bottoms on top. You rinse them out afterwards.

I wouldn't wear them on a really heavy period day but they are good if it's like easing off a bit. And I mean I wear them just for swimming and get changed asap afterwards. I don't get on with tampons and they're the next best thing imo
