What ornaments do you like?

I'm not really an ornament person and I hate clutter, but there's something missing in a little snug room we've recently redecorated. I'm looking for some ideas of nice ornaments but nothing too fussy if that makes sense. I like an earthy/nature style and saw some beautiful glass birds but they were about £100 each and I don't have that to spend. Any ideas?

Plants are nicer than most ornaments, and serve the same purpose.

ClemmyTine · 17/07/2022 11:59

I like Royal Worcester blush ivory figurines/jugs etc and Dux figures.

Scandinavian style bird ornaments are simple and beautiful.

I don’t. Grew up with a mum and gran who adored every kind of shit. My nan evan had pebbles and seashells from every beach she visited,

so i don’t have clutter.

Defiantlynot41 · 17/07/2022 12:29

I don't ... but if you've seen something you love, why not try e-bay, charity shops or antique shops?

Mum4kids1dog · 17/07/2022 12:29

I've got a few minimalist type vases and glass ornaments on my mantelpiece. And I know it's not to everyone's taste but I collect antique and vintage dolls. They are mainly in my bedroom but I've got a couple of the nicer ones in my living room. Have a look on Ebay for the style you like. I've also got some retro ornaments from my childhood on my kitchen shelf.

Do you have a homesense near you? They get loads of ornaments and bits in, I love them 😂 they get deliveries pretty much every day and the prices are normally really good, the things are quite individual to so I can always find bits I like. Ive got some lovely candles / vases / mini sculpture like things from there that just look fab around the house.

Clawdy · 17/07/2022 12:36

Old-fashioned I know, but I love some Royal Doulton figurines. Used to be so expensive, some still are, but you can often pick them up in charity shops now.

Sea shells, fossils, dinosaur themed, and seaside themed items, those my favourite at the moment. Then it's plants and forests themed.

thecatsthecats · 17/07/2022 12:45

Pinecones from around the world, books, books, books, and some seasonal decorations - Easter tree, Christmas decs,

I also have a little "village" of big candle holders in the shape of houses lined up on a windowsill. But on the whole not a fan of ornaments.

takeitandleaveit · 17/07/2022 12:59

I shall describe the ornaments I can see from where I am currently sitting, and then you tell me!

A bright green jointed wooden toy crocodile (there are no kids in the house by the way)

A tiny metal Buddha about 3 cm high

A piece of stone that looks a bit like Cleopatra's Needle

A wedding photo

Dead pot plant - aloe vera, goodbye vera

A scented candle, some sort of cedar wood smell

A coaster with a puffin on it

A Matroshka in the shape of a fat ginger cat

A piggy bank in the shape of a snail

A darts trophy

A pewter jug with pound coins in it

A West German art pottery fruit bowl

Bit of a mixture there. I think my taste is best described as 'the random clutter look'.

quirkychick · 17/07/2022 13:00

The Scandinavian or glass birds sound lovely, especially if your style is minimalist anyway. You might find similar on Etsy.

The items from the natural world changed seasonally or a plant in a lovely pot all sound as if they would fit well.

I don't like lots of small knick knacks, but we have some things that are meaningful around the house. The sitting room has bookshelves with books and a few "art" items, such as a sculpture of dp done when he was a child, a granite Egyptian cat, a clay handprint by one of the dcs, some candles and candle holders. The kitchen has blue or blue and white pottery and some vintage tins, though a lot of these are useful as well as aesthetic

takeitandleaveit · 17/07/2022 13:01

Go to a car boot sale OP.

You'll see stuff there you'd not find in the shops Grin

TitaniasAss · 17/07/2022 13:10

I do have loads of plants dotted around, but we are both away a lot with work and have mixed success with keeping them alive! I don't like clutter, I just want a couple of small things to finish the room off i suppose. Love the birds!

I love ornaments. I'm a big fan of 'mid century modern' or as I lovingly call it, Nan Tat. I'm particularly fond of murano glass, teak animals and west German pottery.

Classica · 17/07/2022 14:04

If you're looking for something contemporary, OP, it's all about vases these days. Unglazed ceramics in quite a rudimentary style. Rounded minimalist vases in bright colours, or very simple and oversized plain glass vases.

I like the willow tree figurines if you wanted something a bit more personal than just an object
