Bank fraud

Has anyone else experienced bank fraud after a hospital stay? I had it happen about 5 days after coming out of hospital after giving birth - card details obviously stolen and someone went on an online gambling spree. Literally the only place I can think of where a random might have had access to my personal stuff is in the hospital. And due to Covid it was a locked ward with only partners allowed in. I just can't get my head around someone being low enough to take advantage of women at their most vulnerable. It's kind of shaken my faith in humanity as most of the staff were really nice and in general I had a 'good' experience.

I did get the money back and it's being 'investigated' by the fraud team. Just wondered how common this is?

I find it hard to believe that someone would steal your card details and wait 5 days but I’m sure with a 5 day old baby you can remember every place you’ve been to since as there probably aren’t that many!

was your purse/bag unattended in hospital?

Are your card details saved to your phone?

MistyRock · 17/07/2022 07:43

I very much doubt anyone physically stole your details off of your card. I had this happen to me. Someone tried using my details to do online gambling. The bank stopped it and cancelled my card. I wasn't even in the UK at the time and very rarely actually used that card. I'm pretty sure it all happens online.

I know someone who had their bank app (on their phone) hacked
(Or thats what the bank & police thought)

No card details on phone. I literally hadn't been anywhere else and the only thing I had spent money on was an online supermarket shop (as was pretty busy with feeding all night, recovering from birth etc!!!!)

By necessity I had to leave my bags when I went to the toilet etc. They weren't obviously left lying around.

I had this. Dozens of 99p withdrawals overseas spent on an Ireland based gambling site. I was always very, very, careful with bank details ,statements, and card and never used any online banking,or ATMs, or entered my bank details online or even for mobile phone top ups. I'm not going to post exactly how the fraud worked but it hinged on the fact that the overseas country didn't need the security card number from back of card or even the correct name and address. The fraudster had used utterly gibberish name and address. Basically the overseas fraudsters could just guess what might be a Bank card number,go online and see if the number worked. I don't know if the banks have closed this loophole. I was furious.

Have you used unsecured Wi-Fi at any point? That’s how I got done, using Wi-Fi that didn’t need a login so must have been intercepted somehow. They went on a Pizza Hut and Matalan bender - classy.

catsnore · 17/07/2022 14:08

No unsecured Wi-Fi as far as I can remember! May just be a coincidence timing wise so just wondering if it had happened to anyone else after a hospital stay really.

That's interesting about the overseas angle. I think a lot of gambling sites operate like that which is why they were able to use my card details to gamble but were refused all the takeaways they tried to order 😂

The bank have traced the user profile on the gambling site but I imagine its a fake one as haven't heard anything more.
