So upset with decorating job gone wrong

Really upset. SadThere are some very clear issues with parts of the house and on some walls. Lots of drips as he spray painted. We gave him the £600 of a £1180 agreed price and he's said he'll come back on Wednesday to fix it but I doubt he will and if he does I doubt he'll do a good job.

I just need someone to fix the walls. Would another decorator be willing to come and rectify this and if so where do I find a great decorator ? I'm in Manchester if anyone can reccomend someone.

It depends on if it’s a job done badly or a job that couldn’t be successful because the walls are damp or the paint already on the walls won’t cover evenly.
As you say there are drips - down the walls?— that suggests the paint has been applied excessively. Leaving it until next week is a good idea as it will dry and cure by then and might look more even. If the drips are thick they could then be sanded back and repainted.

No issues of damp in our house, apparently he was filling cracks /small holes and he's either over filled or something because it now looks awful in those parts.

I could attach some pics

So this is one of the walls, it's only a small patch but it's got lots of tiny dots or bubbles or something ? Never had that before on this wall

Why was he spraying rather than painting ?
And what sort of paint was he painting over and using ?
I only ask as it looks like the paint won't stick properly this is sometimes the case when trying to layer the wrong kinds of paint (Matt water based over vinyl silk for example) and it keeps coming back off on the roller. Wondering if that's why he's sprayed instead.

*why was he spraying rather than rollering I meant

Most painters spray these days, if done properly it gives a better finish than rollers/brushes.

OP have you asked him to rectify it? It just needs a light sand then another coat. I think the weather being so hot may be the problem, the paint’s drying too quickly

ofHardey · 17/07/2022 11:24

Yes spraying is the new norm apparently but I hate it ! Roller is way better.

Parts of it is cracking as well. I'll attach pics. So gutted. It was farrow and ball estate emulsion over a valspar mid sheen. Possibly could be the problem.

But then we have the same paint gone over a dulux Matt and still having cracking in some parts. I think he was just a shit decorator and spraying when he really doesn't know how to spray well.

We could fairly easily sand areas and roller but would that part of the wall look different to the rest as it's been sprayed ?

Valspar is awful stuff and that will be your problem- it needs sanded right back before painting over as I have had major problems with painting over thus before

No really, done properly, spraying gives a far better finish. I’m an absolute amateur but would say the problem is that he’s not thinned the paint enough for spraying.

Have you asked him to rectify it?

ofHardey · 17/07/2022 12:57

Yes we've asked him to rectify it and he said he's coming back on wedndsy to sort it. He wanted all the money and my dh offered him £500 which he wasn't happy with at all. Dh upped it to £600 and reassured him that he would get the remaining balance in full once he's sorted the issues. I have a gut feeling he's cut his losses and won't be back for his money or the work.

Oh that’s really bad. We have a sprayer and you do have to reset it every time you use it to account for different paint consistencies.

We had similar with a dreadful plasterer. He came back and did an even worse job. It might be better not to come back at all.

As an aside, I do all decorating myself now because I do a better job than any painter I’ve ever had.
