How to make your room cooler, with photo

I thought I'd pass on this tip I read online. We needed to do something as we have rabbits living in our conservatory.

We put foil on the windows (see photo). It's made the room appreciably cooler. The foil is hot to the touch, however.

Look it up - likely to start a fire and really dangerous.

Looked it up but can't find anything saying that putting foil on windows causes fires. Have you got a link, please?

Melting point of aluminium is 660C...

in hot countries I’ve seen reflective covers on windscreens, surely is fine

This looks useful info: firefighterinsider.com/aluminum-foil-flammable/

Doesn't seem to be an issue.

Just had a new compact aircon delivered today. The old one is still working (it’s over 20 yrs old) but felt sorry for the DS and the dog( who sleeps with him) and bought a new one for our room.
It is fantastic.
As you can see we also have thick white Venetian blinds because the room is south facing. It looks cramped because we have a 6’ bed. Bedrooms are for sleeping in.

Do you mean the reflection of the sun might cause a fire?

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 16/07/2022 18:31

You can also use windscreen visors, they may even fold up and fit into a window so you can remove them when needed

IloveJudgeJudy · 16/07/2022 18:36

We didn't have enough windscreen shields so used foil instead 🙂.

I use emergency rescue blankets rather than foil. Dirt cheap and has the advantage of being so thin it actually lets lots of light through while blocking out the heat.

saleorbouy · 16/07/2022 18:41

If you just moisten the glass the foil will attach and remain in place for weeks.
We always took a roll of foil on holidays to black out DC windows when younger.
It's great to reflect heat too and reduce solar gain.

TinaWeymouthsBass · 16/07/2022 19:07

For best results the foil should go on the outside as stops the glass from heating up.

Ooh I’m going to try this thanks ! Our two bedrooms get all the sun and it’s impossible to sleep. Can’t open windows due to loud road ☹️
