Swimming when you can’t use tampons

Has anyone found a way to swim when you’ve got your period? Apart from tampons.
Alternatively, any tips for helping a teenager who just can’t get the hang of putting a tampon in?
Any advice very gratefully received.

Presumably a mooncup is out of the question if she can’t get a tampon in.

I couldn’t get a tampon in until after I lost my virginity, but that’s probably not an ideal solution for you OP…

Www.cheeky wipes.com got dd 14 a period swimsuit for our holiday worked a treat

If she's not very heavy then she'll probably get away with it, as water pressure stops much from coming out at once but I would have been so worried as a teen. I do remember miserably sitting on rocks in a soaking sanitary towel having totally failed to get one in yet again!

If you feel comfortable, encouraging her to put her own fingers up inside will help her get a feel for where the tampon is supposed to go. I got the hang of tampons after doing this.

The period swimwear is brilliant though, wish I'd had that when I was a teenager!

Has she tried tampons with applicators. Not the thick cardboard ones. The slim smooth plasticky ones.

Period swimwear. Water pressure in a pool or ocean stops most o

My 15/16 year old wears modibodi swim - it's been amazing!!

Stops most of the bleeding.

The only risky time is when you're out of the pool and using the poolside showers. If the swimwear goes a bit skewed then you can have a leak down the inside of your thigh but it's really a minimal risk and you're in a shower anyway.

I found a mooncup easier than tampons but not sure if that would be the case if she's never used either. Also as a teen I actually found the tampons without an applicator easier.

Another vote for Modibodi! My daughter used their bikini bottom under a standard (boyleg) swimsuit, and she felt confident enough to go swimming and use a hot tub. The bikini bottom isn’t designed for heavy flow, but my DD was ok - I’d recommend getting changed asap after getting out of the water, rather than staying in the costume. Leaking starts quite quickly if it’s a heavy day!

Period swimwear

SpareTheRod · 16/07/2022 20:17

Thank you so much, everyone. We’ll pick a period swimsuit. Super helpful.

@TheLeadbetterLife Noooooo! 😂

If your DD wants to try tampons again, I had more success with the plastic applicators or non-applictor ones.

My DD has the modibodi period pants and although expensive, they've really boosted her confidence. Hoping the period swimsuit does the trick for your DD.

DecimatedDreams · 16/07/2022 20:55

Thank you so much for this OP - just ordered ModiBodi bottoms on recommendation of posters - DD is really trying to get on with tampons, but not convinced she can do it plus having PCOS means her cycles are v unpredictable, so she gets caught out quite often.

deedledeedledum · 17/07/2022 12:31

How do period swimsuits work? I'm picturing the built in absorption pad - like with period knickers. But when you go swimming, doesn't the absorption area just fill with water? And won't you come out with a sodden, heavily water logged undercarriage? And won't the blood end up washing out if the padded area into the pool much like when you actually wash them?

SpareTheRod · 18/07/2022 10:35

Thanks all for taking the time to share your knowledge. Much appreciated.
I've ordered Modibodi bikini bottoms
Thanks also for the tampon advice
