Is this an aging thing??

So my feet hurt. Like really bloody hurt.
With this warm weather I want to wear sandals but by the end of the afternoon I have to find something with a rubber sole or fur lined because my feet can't take anymore. They feel properly bruised on the bottom. I feel like I need to start wearing those Hotter cushioned soles. WTAF is this about? I'm only 43 for crying out loud. Anyone else like this?

Yes but I'm 54 and

...overweight.

donkhonk · 16/07/2022 16:29

I've really noticed this this year, and I'm 38. ☹️

Peri menopause.
And are you overweight ? Do you wear low heeled, good supportive shoes ?

ThomasinaGallico · 16/07/2022 16:37

Rheumatoid arthritis is often exacerbated by hot and sticky weather. Alternatively, if your feet are used to being encased in socks and supportive trainers, suddenly standing around in flat, flimsy sandals will come as a huge shock to them. And yes, your joints and ligaments in general get less flexible as you age. Menopause and perimenopause don’t help either.

Yep, once you start looking you’ll notice a higher and higher percentage of comfy sole wearers as women get older. Probably same for men but I haven’t studied their feet.

I’ve been told by a podiatrist that we lose the fat pads on the soles of our feet as we age. Thus less cushioning and a need to go for padded soles to replace what we’ve naturally lost.
which makes sense to me.
my go to are crocs or fit flops for the cushioning. Can’t seem to wear trainers due to them rubbing my heels raw.

Meant to add, I know it’s summer when I get blisters on my feet from walking in sandals. 😂 Only happens the first couple of times then I’m fine.

Mine went just after 40, but I started wearing supportive insoles and that made a massive difference, they just slot into any shoes I am wearing - but that means sandals not always possible.

Have a look at Skechers sandals, e.g. their Rumble On or Foamies ranges. Really comfy and much "younger" than Hotter!

Flavabobble · 16/07/2022 20:27

I'm 55 and don't have problems with my feet despite being on them for up to 12 hours at a time. I do, however spend significant sums on my shoes.

Visit a chiropodist before you do anything else.

Bouncealot · 16/07/2022 20:33

First perimeno sign for me.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 17/07/2022 08:17

I have no issues with my feet being sore but I do wear decent, supportive footwear. Even my flats and sandals are designed to be supportive and protect my feet.

Sounds boring but I'm on my feet all day at work so I need to protect them or I can't do my job!

Go to a podiatrist, Op. There could be a whole raft of things -fallen arches, stretched ligaments, plantar plate injury. You may need orthotics. Point is, if there is some kind of mechanical issue with your feet, walking around without proper support will exacerbate things and you could end up with shit ankles and/or knees too over time. (Saying all this as someone with virtually no arches and huge foot mechanic issues.)

If you can tolerate them, Birkenstocks are a godsend. And stay away from ballet flats - absolutely terrible for the feet.
