This story is shocking: why are the Met and Housing services so bad, and why do we put up with it?

So who the hell did the police make contact with??

Probably nobody. They're corrupt and lazy as fuck

I find it worrying that so many people are dismissing this as nobody's fault. Both the police and housing association were told about a foul smell. Letters were building up in her letterbox. Her gas company stuck a notice on her door threatening to cut off her supply. One neighbour repeatedly reported her suspicions that she had died and was ignored. It was actually a different neighbour that persuaded the police to visit twice. They claimed she was ok despite not being able to make contact. There were reasons to suspect she wasn't ok and that they needed to break into the house to check on her. It wasn't just somebody reporting they hadn't seen their neighbour in a few days.

It's very worrying. People are so lacking in empathy and accepting of crap service that the police and crappy housing associations are allowed to get away with behaviour like this. The CEOs are paid a nice salary though so that's ok.

Housing associations are supposed to do gas checks yearly by law how did they get away with not doing them?

The police shouldn't lie and if they didn't lie who did they talk to and why did they not notice a fucking dead body

Why were the housing association ignoring the tenants was the rent being paid? Were her wages being paid?

How can someone dissappear for two and a half years and not be missed by officials? Clearly the neighbours said something

This is disgusting. It should have been very obvious to the police if they had bothered at all. She had suddenly stopped going to work, letters building up, foul smell, worried neighbours, yet they decided not to enter the properly and actually lied about making contact with her.

I didn't even think that about the gas checks!!

Doesn't surprise me as much as it might - Joyce Vincent ('Dreams of a Life') hadn't paid her rent contributions for the best part of three years, I think.

to be fair how can they disappear for two and a half years and not be missed by friends, family, colleagues?!

everything - everything - seems to be the fault of the authorities these days.

Well the authorities were negligent so of course it's their fault. What planet are you on?

How heartless does one have to be to come up with this bullshit?

Very sad, but how is the Met and housing services in any way to blame?! She apparently led her life in a way that touched nobody else's, which is tragic, but who can be held to blame for that?

She may have been perfectly happy.

I stopped reading when the used the word spinster

Why is that heartless? Can you actually tell me?

Are people missing or just ignoring the bit where the police lied about having contacted her?

We don’t know they lied. They might’ve contacted the wrong person, misunderstood something etc. Easily done in a block of flats, perhaps they knocked on the wrong door. Until we know we can’t just presume they lied.

Seems to me to be Tory bots that will excuse anything rather than hold the authorities to account. Grenfell, anyone?

OP posts:
Wouldloveanother · 16/07/2022 16:24

I would hold them to account, if there was proof or confirmation that they lied.

LadyEloise1 · 16/07/2022 16:28

I just hope that senior management investigate and find out who in the police were sent to do a welfare check and what exactly happened so that someone is held to account if there was a cover up. Lessons should be learned from the tragedy.
Was she still working or had she retired ?
May her soul rest in peace. So sad.

IncompleteSenten · 16/07/2022 16:34

They claimed they made contact with her approximately a year after she is estimated to have died.

Either they lied about going or they were grossly incompetent and asked someone in a different flat if she was Sheila Seleoane and they said yes.

Triotriotrio · 16/07/2022 16:56

A very similar case like this happened near me. An old guy was dead for approximately 2.5 years and was only found because all his saving got used up and so his mortgage stopped being paid and the bailiffs arrived to evict him. He was found mummified and with the radio still on. His family all lived abroad and ran his business abroad for him. I can only assume they thought it fab he hadn't asked for any money from it for years. He had a flight booked that he'd missed to go over there 2.5 years before he was found and that's how they dated when he'd died, that and the date on the milk in his fridge.

Its really sad, but some people have horrible family. Or they are the horrible one. Some people, rightly or wrongly have no one who cares.

I can also easily believe that the Met police lied about checking on her. Lazy feckers

He neighbours did notice and reported it to the authorities many many times. That's why we're blaming the authorities.

I'm still confused about why her colleagues didn't notice or care.

It's very odd. If someone doesn't turn up to work and you can't get hold of them you raise the alarm. There were no details about the employment side of it. Had she retired? Why were deflated balloons found around her?

Especially a medical secretary FFS. Pretty important job!

Wartywart · 16/07/2022 18:18

Very odd that her job didn't wonder where she was.

Well they said they spoke to her after she died and said she was fine how is that not proof?

caringcarer · 16/07/2022 18:38

The Met police clearly lied and should have just said they tried to contact her but no one answered door and then someone should have tried again. Very sad she had no friends who would have raised alarm and when neighbours raised concern they were dismissed. Do bare in mind though it was during Covid times so many were staying home.
