I sometimes just go to a random shelf and make myself pick one from that shelf. It's a good way of discovering new authors.

Hannelore Cayre, The Godmother. Very smart stylish noir with a twist!

I also look at the new releases and the returned books trolley, or at the themed delays they often have. This time of year there is likely to be a holiday themed one!h
it's hard to recommend without knowing what you like but I'm reading one by Sarah Morgan which is good, easy to read without being too silly.

I'll give anything a try. I've enjoyed historical fiction, crime, thrillers.

I didn't rate Midnight library or Thursday murder club . I thought American Dirt was the best book I'd read in a long time. Lived where the crawdads sing.

Anything by John Steinbeck or Kazuo Ishiguro

I was hoping to get Klara and the sun but it wasn't in.

Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks about the village of Eyam in the time of the great plague.

Precious Bane by Mary Webb about a girl born with a hare lip in the Puritan period.

Anything by Salman Rushdie, Barbara Comyn's, Issac Bashevis Singer,

I have really enjoyed The Tattooist of Auschwitz, Cilka's Journey and Three Sisters, all by the same author.

Also loved Where the Crawdads Sing & American Dirt. Pachinko was also a good read. Also The Nightingale. These are all fairly meaty, I would say.

Often in libraries (I work in a couple) there will be displays in each section, so maybe grab one of those?

Let us know what you choose!

If i'm without inspiration in the library I always check the new in, sometimes there are gems.

I also hated Midnight Library and didn't get much out of Thursday Murder Club either.

Recently read and loved The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak, The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley-Heller, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins-Reid and Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. All solid reads.

An older book they're more likely to have that reminds me (in a way) of where the crawdads sing is Once Upon A River by Diane Setterfield. Very different vibe but similar dreamlike storytelling and a lovely book, even if not necessarily summery.
