Obviously an old thread, but will add anyway.

Glad to see mentions of Puglia. If you’re on an extended trip and have a hire car then it’s a lovely region to explore. Just take your time. Plenty of rural roads, olive groves, etc. It’s a region to meander through, not to have a “wow” destination to arrive at. So many little coves etc. Otranto is lovely - and probably more like that on the journey.

It’s a long time since I was in that region, but I also loved being able to stop at random places to fill up containers with wine.

The “heel of the boot” really is a lovely place to explore, especially if you’re not constrained by a “fitting it all in” holiday.
