Job interview on Monday - what to wear in the predicted extreme heat!

Really important interview as desperate to move out of current job and this one is a third more pay!

Really cannot stand the thought of wearing a suit and jacket.

Thinking black maxi dress with 3/4 length sleeves and wedge sandals.

Need to look extremely professional.

Yay or Nay?

Doesn’t really sound ‘extremely professional’. Suit trousers and a thin top? No jacket?

Apric0tjam · 15/07/2022 18:06

I think that sounds fine (although 3/4 sleeves and black dress could be hot too!) Do you have a loose fitting blouse you could wear with trousers? Walk into the room with the jacket on and say i hope you don't mind if I take my jacket off?

I used to work in a rather hoity toity establishment with extensive grounds. Suits were required all year round. We were recruiting for a senior position and it had snowed a lot - we rang round and recommended that candidates wore wellies! I think in extremes of weather people will understand/ expect people to modify what they wear.

Pumpkintopf · 15/07/2022 18:06

Maxi dress sounds a bit 'floaty' maybe? Could you wear a tailored dress, or as pp suggested, suit trousers/skirt, lightweight top- goi could always carry the suit jacket, can't imagine anyone will mind you not wearing it!

I'm interviewing on Monday and have told my candidates that t shirts and shorts are fine.

Will the offices have aircon?

NormalForNuneaton · 15/07/2022 18:07

What is the job as that might help us decide?

eg. a creative post like graphic designer for example would lend itself to that outfit ok but if you're going for some high-powered financial role in the city, not so much!

ItsOnlyWordsInnit · 15/07/2022 18:18

Black maxi dress and wedges says Friday evening at the beach rather than ‚it’s hot but I know how to dress appropriately.‘. A lawyer friend once had an interview on an extremely hot day - 35 degrees plus - and wore a linen 3/4 length light trouser suit with sleeveless top. She got the job too.

cinci · 15/07/2022 18:21

Your outfit should be fine, depending on the cut. I went to an interview in a long linen dress from Next with sandals. They didn't care, and really liked me.

Wouldn't want to work for anyone who was so uptight that they couldn't make a slight exception in a bloody heatwave. Too much hard work.

Blankbias · 15/07/2022 18:24

I also have an interview on Monday and will be wearing a linen dress with flat smart sandals (closed heel, not too strappy). Wedges might be ok, but not rope heel (too holiday). I’ll also take a linen jacket as the dress is sleeveless, will pop the jacket on just before the interview to cover any sweat patches I may get on the tube! Recommend thin sweat-wicking underwear (not cotton as is dries too slowly). I think a maxi dress is too casual/beachy. Mid calf or knee length is smarter and still cool.

Happycow · 15/07/2022 18:26

If its for a job that sounds relatively formal, will they not be interviewing in an air-conditioned office? In which case, id say normal business wear and you can strip off afterwards!

PermanentlyTired03 · 15/07/2022 18:27

Could you wear something cool and change when you get there?
A maxi dress sounds fairly casual and 3/4 sleeves would be hot!

girlmom21 · 15/07/2022 18:31

I wouldn't wear a maxi if you're aiming for a really professional look. Either get a nice tailored dress or skirt or go with the suit trousers and a top and lose the jacket.

MeridasMum · 15/07/2022 18:37

Sounds like a nice outfit but it's definitely not "extremely professional ".

I'd suck it up for an hour - ankle grazers, sleeveless shirt and jacket will not kill you.

littlefireseverywhere · 15/07/2022 18:40

I think that sounds fine, wear it with a nice necklace etc

Alwayspaintyournails · 15/07/2022 18:40

I had to give a formal presentation in Seville and it was 34deg. I went for a wide leg sleeveless navy jumpsuit with closed toe sandals and a 3/4 sleeve cream jacket.

MajorCarolDanvers · 15/07/2022 18:41

Nice dress sounds fine to me

Nipplestoyou · 15/07/2022 18:47

Surely if it's a formal (office?) environment they will likely have A/C

Whiskers4 · 15/07/2022 21:41

I've always taken the attitude I'd wear what I'd wear if I was offered the job. If they don't think I.I'm suitable due to what I'm wearing, I'm not suitable for job.

Black maxi dress sounds good.

TWmover · 15/07/2022 23:45

Perhaps go more for a mid length if you need to look more formal. A short sleeved shirt dress? It wouldn't be any hotter but having a collar would make it look smarter? I agree with a pp regarding rope on the wedges. A smart flat sandal would be fine. Good luck!
