How lovely is this?

We broke up from school today and I was gifted this from one of my students. It's amazing. She picked each plant and planted them in soil in a container that she bought from a charity shop (off the back of a project we did in school about reusing and recycling - so impressed!)
I love it so much but I've never been good with plants and I would hate to destroy this beautiful creation. Can anyone advise how to look after these plants?
Thank you :)

That's lovely OP.
They are succulents..don't over water them.

mineallmine · 15/07/2022 16:49

How fabulous! They look like succulents do the less you do to them, the better. They like light. Very little water. Turn them around every few days so they all get the light. What a thoughtful present!

What a lovely thoughtful gift! As said already, they are succulents, they thrive on neglect Wink Put them on a sunny windowsill and water occasionally.

Wellthatsjustswell · 15/07/2022 16:53

That’s a lovely gift, very pleasing on the eye & I’m sure it warms the heart to know you’ve touched someone in such a way they want to show appreciation in such a meaningful way.
I hope someone with expert help comes along but some tips here

Ahhh what a thoughtful and lovely child.

Belatedeyebrows · 15/07/2022 16:54

Thank you for all the advice! I've got a sunny spot in the kitchen so will put it there. I can't stop smiling every time I see it!

Ahhh what a thoughtful and lovely child.

She absolutely is!! I can't share her journey, but if I could you would be so impressed with all the effort that has gone into this. I am so proud of her!

Don't water too often and make sure to let it dry out completely before watering again. You really can't neglect it enough.

Beautiful 😀

NCgoingdry · 15/07/2022 17:13

I am genuinely loving the fact that there's a group of plants called succulents. That's actually made my day.

Lalosalamanca · 15/07/2022 17:17

Ahhh that's great to hear. You must of played a part in her journey and for that you should be proud of yourself too. Well done you both

AchillesLastStand · 15/07/2022 17:27

That’s really beautiful, lucky you. I have one small succulent for my DS to take into school for his teacher next week.

I’m an experienced succulent owner with over 20 plants. They will need a sunny windowsill. Yes don’t overwater but don’t underwater the same time. There will be no drainage holes in that container so you need to make sure the soil is quite dry before watering. Poke your finger in and it feels dry water. My plants at this time of year need watering every week to 10 days depending on how hot it is. You can also buy succulent/cactus feed if they turn you into an enthusiast. Enjoy!

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 15/07/2022 17:28

What a wonderful gift!
I agree with not watering as much as other houseplants and sunny is great but not direct sunlight.

NiqueNique · 15/07/2022 17:32

Hardly water at all! Seriously once every 3 months or something (well, can’t remember for certain off the top of my head how often you should do it but nowhere near every week or two or even every month iirc) and then let them have a good long drink, but don’t let them stay waterlogged or the roots will rot.

What a truly beautiful gift!

NiqueNique · 15/07/2022 17:33

Oh - just seen an expert’s reply directly above mine! Listen to them not me! 😊

elephantoverthehill · 15/07/2022 17:44

I'm not sure but from the photo it looks like there is a pot within the pot so there will be drainage but as others have said water infrequently and don't let the plants sit in water in the outer pot.

Belatedeyebrows · 15/07/2022 17:47

@eleelephantoverthehill I had a little peek and it appears just to be plants and soil, no inner pot. Will that make a difference?

What a wonderful, thoughtful gift. I'd love it if someone presented me with something like this. I'm echoing all the advice about not over-watering. 🌹

Belatedeyebrows · 15/07/2022 17:51

@Lalosalamanca thank you, that's a lovely thing to say!

NiqueNique · 15/07/2022 17:58

@Belatedeyebrows I think it does vary depending on what approach you take - water little more often (but not too much nor too often) vs. a serious soak much less often. But I only have 3 little succulents and about 2 years experience so I’d still go with pp’s advice!
