Yellow sun cream stains

mydudero · 15/07/2022 15:00

Any tips to get yellow sun cream stains out of white clothing please? I usually wash lights with fairy non bio pods, and have tried fairy / vanish stain removers but they won't budge.

Also any recommendations for an spf50 sun cream that doesn't leave yellow stains to begin with would be much appreciated Grin

I was just coming on to ask the same thing!

It's so annoying isn't it. Bought myself a really nice white summer blouse last year and yellow all around the neck if it :-(

Sunlight will bleach the mark, but only really fade it. Not remove it entirely. You could try soaking the garment in a weak solution of thin bleach, but sometimes that can turn the stains a pink colour or damage the fabric generally. I'd only recommend that if you're prepared for the bleach to ruin it. (I've had some success with this method, but also some pink staining with this method!)

I put neat fairy liquid on them. Seems to work fine.

My child is about to go into year 6 and I'm yet to solve this problem. The best I can suggest is to put sun cream on 15 min or so before getting dressed so it dries in.

Someone has sworn by institut esthederm sun cream. I've bought some for my holiday.

Obviously no idea if this will work, of course.

I came to say this. I saw a thread recently recommend it.

Pre-soak with fairy and white vinegar following by a wash with bio powder (not on a cool/quick wash).

JimMorrisonsleathertrousers · 15/07/2022 15:43

If you use bleach, make sure you wash the shirt first or the bleach will turn the sun cream pink!

My sons school polo shirts are beyond help. My DD managed to wear them for 2 years and keep them spotless. But in a year my son has wrecked them 😂

JimMorrisonsleathertrousers · 15/07/2022 15:44

I'm sure I've seen a sun cream (Nivea?) which claims to be stain free but maybe I dreamt it?

Simonjt · 15/07/2022 15:46

De-solv-it stain remover gets it off ours, usually in places like the range for about £2.

Saisong · 15/07/2022 15:48

Get some Sticky Stuff remover, Robert Dyas sell it, the brand is something like Resolveit/Resolver?
Liberally douse the stains, leave for a few minutes then wash as normal. It does leave a smell, but you can add an extra rinse and/or leave to air - it does go. It's the only thing that i found that removed the yellowing, even from the horrid P20 stuff.

I’m sure I read eucalyptus oil works; put it neat on the stain then wash as usual. I always use gel/clear spray and never had that stain anything.

Bivvy · 15/07/2022 15:56

i find very hot water ‘sets’ stains, so I use mildly warm water and fairy first of all to try and rinse majority off. I would then use either Napisan or the elbow grease stain remover spray around the collar or stained areas, then hang the garment outside in direct sunlight all day and that should work

i find the Boots Soltan spf50 kids ‘stay and play’ 8 hour one to be the best. I use this for my little girl, it can leave slight yellow marks but nowhere near as bad as others. It also has good protection and she never burns wearing it. It’s the most expensive of the whole range at £10 a bottle but worth it.

I use the spf30 Soltan spray on Myself and that’s not left any yellow marks at all. It’s still a white cream consistency not an oil. That’s £4 a bottle and the best I’ve used

Anyone looking for tips like this need to follow the ‘the organised mum method’ TOMM Facebook group- what they don’t know isn’t worth knowing!

imnotthatkindofmum · 15/07/2022 16:00

Use a powder, do a hotter wash for just whites, hang on line in sunshine all day.could add vanish to the wash too

cottagegardenflower · 15/07/2022 16:19

It's an absolute bastard to remove. I don't wear white now if it's sunny.
I've found washing with ace bleach on them first and left to soak in a little, and also vanish gel just before it goes in the wash. If you can dry in bright sun that helps as does rubbing it in the old fashioned way.

I'm using Nivea factor 50 and I can assure you it stains.

daisydalrymple · 15/07/2022 16:26

I’ve found ambre solaire clear protect f50 hasn’t caused stains as much as the heavier cream ones. Unfortunately, I’ve found the 8 hour creams the worst for staining.

ReviewingTheSituation · 15/07/2022 16:27

I used to work on a careline for a suncream brand, and we would recommend Dr Beckmann's Stain Slayer. The only thing we found which works.

I've never tried it on my own clothes though (but mainly because I avoid any contact with clothes until the stuff has properly rubbed in!)

Also caveat, it's over 10 years since I worked there, so no idea if the product still exists, or still works!
