I’ve been having really bad probalems sleeping I can get off ok

inabke to get back to sleep

wake up with a racing heart

tried so many things
Listening to sleep stories
meditation
rain sounds
tensing up and then relaxing muscles
Breathing excercise

getting up
watchign a bit of tv down stairs for 45 mins then going back to bed
that hleped once or twice

i know what mainly causing my stress
building work which is a temporary thing
go on a few months I guess
few other stresses too but that the main one

but I’m getting to the point I’m struggling to cope now
With the lack of sleep

I second the melatonin! I am on it for egg quality/IVF but it has been amazing for sleep! I could always fall asleep but would wake up anxious etc in the night 3-4am and be unable to sleep. Totally gone on 3mg melatonin - I sleep like a baby now.

I used to have a tiny amount of night nurse. It was enough to get a restful sleep but it wasn't enough to leave me foggy on waking. It was mainly for the Sunday night insomnia I used to struggle with.

I’ve taken zopiclone on and off for over a year. I was prescribed them when dh was diagnosed with cancer and again when dh died. I’ve slept poorly for years and zopiclone is the only thing (apart from promethazine) that works. It really helps me through bad patches. If I can’t sleep I’m suicidal and as I’m operating machinery in work a danger to myself and others.

i haven’t taken any for 2 months now as my sleep seems to have sorted itself out

Where do you get melatonin from in the UK? I thought it was prescription only?

WestIsWest · 22/08/2022 19:14

Biovea.com

Duettino · 22/08/2022 19:18

@HandbagsnGladrags online. Loads of websites do sell it. Allow a little longer for shipping as it comes from America. Tbh I never remember the webpage so we use a few. One I did use previously no longer allows shipping to UK.

Amazon sell it but it's a lot. I've never purchased so they may also block it.

I'm under the impression that it's hard to get from the GP.

HandbagsnGladrags · 22/08/2022 19:21

Thanks @Duettino and @WestIsWest. I'm going to Turkey in a couple of weeks and it looks like you can get it in pharmacies there -will give it a go. Am fed up of feeling groggy after taking strong anti histamines.

Duettino · 22/08/2022 19:24

Will you be able to bring them back in? Maybe take an empty vitamin packet you can put them in.

DontKeepTheFaith · 22/08/2022 19:27

I use antihistamines: chlorphenamine or sleepaid which is diphenhydramine.

Both work to a degree, diphenhydramine does leave a hangover feeling the next day sometimes.

Good luck getting anything from your GP, they are generally very restricted in what they can prescribe because of the addictive nature of the ‘Z’ drugs and benzo’s.

You're allowed to, yes. But no one would know if they were in my case.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 22/08/2022 22:22

Yeah.

I used melatonin for a bit and they worked but then stopped working. Ditto with strong antihistamines. Night nurse sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 22/08/2022 22:23

And yes the antihistamines gave me awful next day hangover type feelings

Phrenologistsfinger · 22/08/2022 23:17

@HandbagsnGladrags prescribed by my IVF clinic but I have also used some (back-up) melatonin bought online from
the US where it’s just treated as a supplement.

Duettino · 23/08/2022 07:24

Make sure you don't get a slow release one. We have one that's 30 mg (Shock) and has six hour release. Sounds great but what that means is that it kicks in as you need to wake up! We split it in half as I think 30mg would put you on the brink of eternal sleep if you did take it while.
