Otomize- how long before it works?

Diagnosed yesterday with mild inflammation in the ear canal so prescribed otomize. I’m not expecting it to work after just one day, but can anyone offer up any personal experience as to how long it takes to kick in please Flowers I have googled but just got anywhere from 48 hours to 7 days - I’m in so much more pain than yesterday I’m not sure I could cope with 7 days Sad

I haven't used this, but I have experience of antibiotics for severe tooth infection, so I empathise with your pain. From what I can gather, it's expected to kick in properly in 48 hours. The 7 day thing seems to refer to symptoms completely gone. But whenever I've had antibiotics, I've always started to notice a difference within a few short hours. Often it's the inflammation that is so painful, and this should start to reduce very quickly, well before the infection is gone away. Family members who've had ear infections say the same. So don't panic... Get some painkillers down you, and it'll improve soon. It's awful, I know.

It's amazing stuff. I got relief almost immediately although it took about 3-5 days, I guess, to heal up the infection completely.

I'm sorry it's not working for you. Give it a couple more days yet.

Thank you both, I’ve not known pain like this Sad I’m really hoping that after 48 hours tomorrow it’ll start to kick in - I just worry that I’ll be one of the unlucky ones who doesn’t respond to it as I thought there’d be at least some instant relief. Currently alternating between paracetamol, ibuprofen and codeine so hopefully I’ll get a bit sleep tonight.

I’ve been here!

if it really doesn’t work within 36 hours (or you can’t get the nozzle in your ear cos it’s so inflamed) then go to out of hours as it’s the weekend. I ended up in A&E and they put me on oral antibiotics last time; the doctor couldn’t even get the ear light thing in my ear as it was so inflamed and full of mank! So the topical antibiotics couldn’t get to where they were needed anyway.

but the other time I’ve had it, it worked pretty well. So all I’m saying I guess is that if it is not working, do go and get someone to look again cos ear infections are horrific

Like cake says, you really have to get the nozzle right down into the ear canal before you squirt and clean the nozzle between spritzers.

I'm so sorry you going through this, it's horrible. I have dermatitis in my ears and sometime the topical cream goes down the canal and gives me infections. So I can fully empathise.

I had this for an ear infection and needed oral antibiotics alongside it as it didn’t do the trick. It was agony. Don’t be hesitant to request a review if you don’t feel it is working within 72 hours. Hope you feel better soon.

I tend towards ear infections whenever I get a cold or other virus. I find it starts to properly work about 48 hrs in but I do feel relief from the hot/itchy feeling just from the cold of the spray but the relief doesn't last that long at first.

Make sure you are tilting your head so you are spraying it and it's running into the canal and spreading around.

You can take paracetamol and ibuprofen as long as neither is contraindicated by other health issues or medication. Alternate them so you do paracetamol then 2 hrs later ibuprofen and so on up to the max of each in a 24 Hr period.

Some people find heat or cold pressed against the ear helps, I don't personally but could work for you.

111 have made me an appointment at urgent care in an hour as I can’t get the nozzle in to do my night time dose. Thanks for the heads up Flowers

Thank you @acquiescence seems it is fairly common to need oral meds as well then.

I had it alongside oral antibiotics.

icedancerlenny · 15/07/2022 23:16

I am prescribed this quite often and I find it works really quickly.

OohLalaDipsy · 15/07/2022 23:18

Thank you @FatAgainItsLettuceTime im sorry you suffer from ear infections as well. This is my first, and hopefully my last! When I saw the GP yesterday (which I was initially refused an appointment and it was only through ringing 111 that they contacted GP saying I needed to be seen) she said it was ear canal was mildly inflamed. The first couple of sprays I could feel it running down in to my ear, but none of the doses today have felt the same. My DD has just had a look with the phone torch and says it’s surrounded by “crusty stuff” and looks very different to my other ear.

Just to say, I don’t mean in any way to GP bash here, my whole surgery has been amazing since I joined last year and are very pro active. It’s just this time I couldn’t get past the receptionist!

An update: urgent care took one look in my ear and said there’s no way the spray would be able to penetrate so I’ve now got oral doxycycline for 14 days. I already feel slightly better in terms of ear pain, but wow do I feel nauseous. I can cope with that though Smile
