I am getting a big one.

My tattoo artist has said "book a full day it's better for cost for you"

It's on my arse, my back and my thigh.

Any experience anyone? Is a day too much?

Your arse, back & thigh sounds like a massive tattoo. Is this your first? That's a hell of a long time to sit when you're not accustomed to the pain.

The amount of time depends on the detail obvs. Fancy showing us a pic of what you want?

Break it up into sessions. My back and bum piece took six sessions in total.

Have you had a tattoo before? How did you manage with the pain?

A design similar to the first one but with the colours of the second one.

That will be painful - both in terms of the actual tattoo and the sitting for it.

I would split it if possible.

est1899 · 15/07/2022 07:55

No reputable tattoo artist would do a full body tattoo, with colour, like that in one day sitting.

SamanthaVimes · 15/07/2022 07:55

I would split something that big. It’s a lot for your body to take otherwise

The design is pretty but definitely do it in stages , you don't want the artist tired and not doing a great job after hours concentrating

I'd be surprised if that can be done in a day. I'd clarify that with the artist. Usually for a large scale piece you'd break it down into line work, shading and colour.

For large scale tattoos it is customary to agree a day rate. That way it's more relaxed for you and the artist as there isn't that sense of being "on the clock" that you have with a per hour rate. Both of you can then break as needed. Typically for me a "day of tattooing" is more like 5-6 hours actually being tattooed with the rest being taken up with set up, applying stencils, lines, adjusting and breaks.

How are you with pain? I have a high pain threshold and had a back piece done a few years ago. We booked one day (6.5 hours) and did all of the outline and a bit of the shading. The tattoo artist then called it a day as his hand was getting sore and his eyes were getting tired so felt it better to stop than continue and it be a bad job. We finished it (2.5 hours) a couple of weeks later after the outline work had healed. Not many people can sit for a full day. I'd probably suggest getting the outline done in one day and the shading/colouring at a later date once the outline has healed.
