Scooters: micro mini or micro maxi

The specs say a mini does up to 110cm and 35kg. A maxi goes from 110cm and up to 50kg

DS is about to turn four, is approx 107cm and 18kg. He's never had his own scooter before but has used one at nursery.

Do we get a mini which he will, on paper, grow out of soonish, or straight for a maxi. I don't think I've ever seen a maxi. Lots of friends have the mini which is why I've gone for a Micro rather than any other one. The kids all seem to love them.

Any experience welcome!

We had both in succession and I'd go straight to the Maxi. The front handle can be put right down and one little growth push and he'll be 110cm anyway. They're brilliant things. Our DD was still riding her Maxi at age 10. (She loved the fact that it didn't fall over when she hopped off!) We had the Maxi that had a "ball" for steering instead of a handle bar. It really made DD very good at balancing. You don't see them anymore though, so I think they may have stopped making that version.

One thing I would mention is that you'll be amazed at the speeds he eventually reaches on it so do consider a helmet. DD went over the handle bars of her Mini and "face planted". Her helmet was completely and utterly wrecked and it was quite frightening to see what a serious head injury she would have suffered without a helmet.

Agree go straight for the maxi. My ds is 10 and still uses his, the handlebar goes down pretty much as low as the mini I think

Maxi plus helmet!

Thanks for the quick (and unanimous!) replies. Yes, yes to a helmet. He has one for his bike so he's used to that at least.

Maxi with handlebar right down is basically equivalent to mini with handlebar right up. Maxi weighs a little more, that's all. DS2 age 4.5 approx 115cm has just moved onto the Maxi (he technically should have probably moved on sooner if we went by the quoted height range). If buying new I'd definitely go for the Maxi. You could buy a Mini quite cheap on Gumtree and resell when finished with it but tbh I'd save yourself the bother and go straight for the Maxi.

Next q - how helpful is it to have one which folds? How much of a PITA is it to get one which doesn't in the car? The price difference is eye watering and most of the time we wouldn't need to put it in the car, but when we are likely to want to e.g. going to grandparents for a weekend, the car will already be choc full of stuff.

I’d definitely go with the maxi, I swapped DD’s mini over for the maxi at the same age/height. You can slot it in the car put other things around it in the car easily enough, I don’t think the folding one is necessary really.

NCHammer2022 · 15/07/2022 20:51

Definitely the maxi. My DD is 4.5 and 110cm and she’s grown out of her mini micro, it looks too small for her now. I’ve seen a few maxi ones out and about and they don’t look ginormous, DD would be fine on one once I get round to sourcing a second hand one!

DrunkenKoala · 15/07/2022 21:52

Maxi, we bought one for DS just after he turned four and it did seem a bit big for him at the time but he soon grew into it and had a good few years out of it.

Fabuleuse · 15/07/2022 21:56

Ours doesn't fold and it's been fine. It isn't bulky so if you put it in your car boot first you could then fit a lot around/on top of it if you are taking it away for a weekend. I think I looked at the folding one and was put off as it was heavier (not sure about this, double check).

AmbushedByCake · 15/07/2022 22:00

Our Maxi doesn't fold but the post clicks out of the base fairly easily anyway.

Try to get a second hand one if you can. They're basically indestructible.

DS was ready for the Maxi at 4.5 when he started school. I found one on FB Marketplace for £25.

I'm in a similar position but going to get my daughter the mini until she becomes confident on her own!

She loves the flashing wheels too!
