Scam artists - "Vehicle Information" and "BT"

Hello

I'm only 39 and am normally more concerned about my parents falling for scams but here we are...

SCAM 1
I wanted to check when my tax was due on my car so in January I google "car tax check" or somesuch and it took me to a website which looked official. I paid 50p to get the info. But lo and behold it turns out I had signed up to a recurring card payment of £5.95 every month! Now I have "cancelled my account" but am phoning the bank to make sure they don't let them take any more. I will lose the previous £40 as a stupidity tax I presume. Looking at Money Saving Expert, it would appear I am not the only person to have fallen for this.

SCAM 2
A very well-spoken young man in a suit, tie and with BT Openreach logos and ID badge came round all our doors today asking Qs about our Wifi. Our local fb group says he was just scouting out houses to rob! I didn't suspect a thing!

I really am going to have to become a lot more careful and suspicious!

I would probably take 2 with a pinch of salt. The 'they're casing your house to rob' is the new 'burn him, he be a witch' 99% of the time.

Scams aren't an age thing anymore. Most are reliant on people being too busy/in a hurry to check what they are doing. It is awful, glad it was only minor scams for you though and not thousands of pounds!

@iklboo haha, sounds about right for the fb local page!

Thanks @Pixiedust1234 yep, my parents are actually super-cautious whereas I fell for this due to being a) busy; and b) overconfident!
