Does anyone have any experience of them?

I have a rescue Arabian Mau. If you want one I can DM you a reputable rescue.

He is loud. Very very loud. I see them advertised as indoor only and honestly he would go insane.

I live in the countryside and he covers a lot of ground every day. He goes berserk kept indoors and doesn't do toys.

He loves climbing trees and spends a lot of his day hanging out in some seriously high trees. Oh and murdering things.

Finally everyone in the village except us hates him. He wanders in and out of their houses, hangs out wherever he likes and beats up their cats. We have him on a schedule to avoid next doors elderly girl.

However he is very loving and we would not have him any other way.

I agree- if you really want a pedigree go to a breed rescue. There are lots.

JorisBonson · 15/07/2022 09:59

Boy cat is half mau (we think). When that side comes out he's an absolute PITA.

Same for girl cat who (we think) is half Bengal.

Just get a nice moggy.

Have just seen you want a cat to be good with children - then don't get a Mau!

While he is very loving it is on his terms. He is not like my rescue moggies who were all up for a cuddle.

They are fit, muscley and all teeth and claw. Vet visits can be very short as he just does his own thing, gets annoyed and then 6kg of raging muscle attacks everything in sight.

If he chews your hand or paws you with his claws, he may think he's playing but it hurts in a way the moggies don't. It could easily end in tears with a child.

Anna he sound's like such a character 😂 on a schedule!!

Yes I did some research on the breed but wanted to double check here as well as there have been some informative threads on breed before.

I thought we’d get a pedigree breed. My parents’ home was always full of Siamese and tonkinese cats. I absolutely adore their chatty, quirky personalities. I met an Abyssinian breeder and played with their kittens. Very sweet. Not allowed outdoors apparently. £800.

But then by chance I met someone who had to rehome their moggy. We basically fell in love the moment we met her. She’s gorgeous and weird. A little more aloof than I’m used to and, as far as I’m concerned, freakishly quiet. But she’s an angel and she’s definitely family.

So maybe we’ll get a Siamese or a tonk or a Burmese one day. But my point is, sometimes you just have to be open to welcoming a cat into your family and the right one will find you.

@Reallyreallyborednow

I hear you.

I understand.

I know what to look out for.

Bengal owner here - didn’t realise they had a bad rep‽
Extremely beautiful, highly intelligent, VERY VERY LOUD and demanding 😼
When he was younger (14 this year) he was very playful and energetic. Would do backflips off a surface to catch the toy mouse you threw, sit, give you his paw and many other intelligent cat stuff. Now, he’s a grumpy old man but still very vocal. Meows (if you can call it a meow) for food, when in the litter box, when you walk by, when you ignore him.
He is a house cat, doesn’t like to go out much even if just in the garden and if our 3 legged moggie goes out (again only in our garden) he gets a right telling off when he gets back. Hissed at for days.
But, he’ll still come for lap snuggles. Let my 4yr old DD try to pick him up and put him where she wants him and have little play with her when he thinks we aren’t watching 😹
He may be a grumpy old man now but he’s still a softie.

HardRockOwl · 15/07/2022 10:12

My daughter has 3 ragdolls and they are just adorable. So they get my vote if you want something placid, super affectionate and beautiful looking.

They can't go out though as they're too stupid and they are the very opposite in personality to an Egyptian Mau so may not be quite right for you

PaperTyger · 15/07/2022 10:13

Staters...i wouldn't say a bad rep but very hard work, vocal , turning taps on and flooding house's!

yeah, this is why they have a “bad” rep.

not bad as such, but breed rescues are bursting for a reason. People think they’re getting a cat with pretty fur, then a high energy, high needs, loud, territorial nightmare turns up and they can’t cope with the yelling at 4am, the backflipping into your dinner, the broken vases where they are one one of their “play” episodes. Plus if they’ve signed an indoor only contract and can’t let it out a contained bengal is a million times worse.

i had a bengal once. I still don’t have any ornaments or vases, and shelves and windowledges are completely clear 😂.

Staters · 15/07/2022 11:38

@PaperTyger He is vocal, it’s like he’s having a conversation with us. Annoys DH when he’s trying to watch something, but it’s all a ploy so he’ll get up and feed him even if I’ve only fed him an hour earlier. Hubby falls for it every time 😹
TAPS yes haha. The running water is a must but not had any flooding in almost 14 yrs luckily.

@Reallyreallyborednow Those DaBird toys were brilliant when he was younger and more energetic.
I don’t miss the early wake up calls, that stopped when we got our other cat.
But yes, we learned pretty early on to keep any vases and ornaments out of his way. Was funny when visitors would put something on the sideboard or windowsill and he’d just knock it off on purpose. One friend always said why is your cat such a dick? 😹
