Waiting for a doctor to call back and need sympathy!

Fairly certain I have tonsillitis. Had it a couple of times and symptoms all fit (temperature, feel exhausted, throat feels like its full of broken glass, white spots on throat and red inflamed tonsils). Definitely not COVID, Ive done tests and all are negative. And actually based on the last time i had the dreaded Rona I'd rather have that, this feels so

At my GP you ring up eleventybilliontimes, speak to the receptionist (praying you get the nice one), go on the call list and wait to speak to a doctor. If they need to see you its an appointment in the next 24 hours but often can sort over the phone. Any medication is requested from the local pharmacy and can be collected or delivered. I actually (apart from the initial difficulty getting through) really like this system.

So, I'm here with 3 toddlers feeling like poo (childminder) and waiting to speak to, or squeak at, the doctor while the children have a rather marvelous time destroying the playroom and garden. They are having the absolute best day because they are completely free to choose whatever they want and have free run of the fruit bowl. Now, 3 year olds aren't particularly known for being the most sympathetic of creatures and they keep laughing when i talk, taking books away when I try story time because i sound very silly and keep eating 3 bites of an apple before deciding they really want a pear/ blueberries/ banana etc.

DH is working from home and while he made me a cup of tea, he split the teabag so i got a mouthful of tealeaves.

Please can i have some sympathy?

Flowers for you OP. Can you send your partner out for ice-cream and have a movie afternoon/nap on the sofa? Tonsillitis is rotten, I hope you feel better soon!

OP, you may not get medication. Tonsillitis is a viral infection and won’t be helped with antibiotics

Rina66 · 14/07/2022 11:47

This was me last week, l was left too long, no docs appts, 3 hours to get a 111 call returned, told to grow up and gargle with salt water and then 16 hours in A & E to then be given IV penicillin, steroids and pain killers - all too late. I'm still in pain when the pain killers wear off, 8 days on.

It can be viral or bacterial, often presents differently
I always have bacterial tonsillitis so always have antibiotics

Not necessarily, I had bacterial tonsillitis recently and had a course of antibiotics :)

Glenthebattleostrich · 14/07/2022 12:07

Mine is usually bacterial, had it I think 4 times and each time it's come back as bacterial when swabbed.

Ive done the salt gargles, am rotating paracetamol and ibuprofen and found some minimilks in the freezer so I'm going to hide and eat one soon.

The 3 smalls are wanting to sleep soon so i should be able to at least sit with eyes closed while I wait.

Hope you are feeling better now @Rina66 that's awful. If i don't get a call back by 4 i can ring an out of hours clinic and go see them.

Can you try a salt water gargle until you manage to get any more help? X

Hadalifeonce · 14/07/2022 12:11

Not sure how old you are OP but glandular fever can present like that. Have you had a blood test?

sunmysun · 14/07/2022 12:14

Sending you sympathy 💐 Recently had tonsillitis and a tonsil abscess on and off for weeks and it's horrible. Hope you get some antibiotics soon.

Glenthebattleostrich · 14/07/2022 12:24

I'm doing salt water gargles. And no, not had a blood test. Im 43, been trying to get an appointment for a hormone/ thyroid check for weeks too. They only offer them on the seventh tuesday after a full moon between 9:30 and 9:32 or something rediculous like that! Im off work in a couple of weeks so will book in then.

And thank you for the flowers and sympathy!

Glenthebattleostrich · 14/07/2022 13:30

I have some penicillin! The doctor was lovely and sorted the prescription after laughing at my voice and telling me she should be paying per minute for the husky voice!!

Children are sleeping so going to try for a sneaky 20 minutes snooze!

What a great doctor @Glenthebattleostrich - wish you a very speedy recovery and lots of respect to you for looking after 3 littleuns whilst dealing with tonsillitis.

Glenthebattleostrich · 14/07/2022 15:10

Thanks @Rina66 The only thing keeping me on my feet is copious amounts of caffeine and the sneaky 20 minutes nap I had.

My doctor is ace, an absolute nightmare to get hold of but once you do absolutely brilliant.
