Afternoon tea

SummerLobelia · 14/07/2022 09:57

Just because the DCs are on holiday already and due to hanging around for the boiler man and a potentially worrying GP appointment later we are not going anywhere so I am planning a fun afternoon tea for us.

Would love suggestions. Dcs are fairly limited of palate and DH is a vegetarian. Current ideas are;

-cucumber sandwiches
-ham and butter sandwiches
-cheese and jersey black butter
-egg and cress
-scones of course!

What do you all love to see on an afternoon tea platter? I love meal threads and love afternoon tea so am up for lots of lovely ideas. :)

Definitely need some bite sized cakes. My ideal would be Portuguese custard tarts

Cucumberbund · 14/07/2022 10:02

Chicken and stuffing, ploughmans, BLT, camembert and cranberry or cheddar and relish and don't forget the desserts.

KylieCharlene · 14/07/2022 10:06

Mini quiche

You've got the sandwiches sorted. You have to have clotted dream with those scones and strawberry jam.
I ditto the small cakes. Mini battenburgs, bite size flapjacks/millionaire shortbreads, mini rolls if you aren't making your own.
How you present it is half the joy. Do you have a tiered cake plate? If not use your prettiest china. A tablecloth and pretty napkins will make it all look special.

SummerLobelia · 14/07/2022 10:11

Oh lovely ideas thank you.

I am kicking myself that I charity shopped a tiered cake stand during a decluttering extravaganza!

My Nan was a cheese and onion sandwich fan, recently I swopped it to spring onions chopped very fine. Very nice.

how about the kids making an old fashioned Victoria sponge, eggs butter, flour, weigh eggs and then all other ingredients are the same weight. Fill with jam, dust with caster sugar. Something to do while they wait.

recently a friend made coffee kisses, which is sponge flavoured with coffee batter, spooned onto a baking tray and cooked, then coffee butter cream sandwich two together.

Pyewhacket · 14/07/2022 10:13

Those small Éclairs.

picklemewalnuts · 14/07/2022 10:14

Tiered cake stand...
Decreasing sizes of plate stacked with a glass between.

Brownie bites
Macarons
Teeny Fruit tarts.
Teeny meringues.

Scatter some iced gems across the plates.

Posh crisps.

@SummerLobelia glad to see Jersey black butter on the menu! Are you a Crapaud??

SummerLobelia · 14/07/2022 10:34

Oh how I wish I were a Crapaud!! No, we were lucky enough to visit earlier this year. I bought a stash of black butter. I was bowled over at how lovely Jersey is and will be taking my parents to visit later this year. :)

Egg mayonnaise on split bridge rolls
Iced French fancies
Jam tarts
Cream cheese and watercress sandwiches
Small dishes of strawberries & cream

AdaColeman · 14/07/2022 11:46

And don't forget a jam jar filled with a little bunch of wild flowers.

Caspianberg · 14/07/2022 12:06

Jam tarts

WinterMusings · 14/07/2022 12:14

Depends what you've got in & what you can be bothered baking, but...as you asked...

you've got sandwiches well covered by now I'm sure...& scones so just a few extra bits.

mini vanilla whirls
mini chocolate dipped biscuits
mini vol au vents -preferably mushroom!!

small crackers (no bigger than ritz crackers) with cheese & cucumber/tomato

mini mini everything, so I can try everything without feeling like a piglet!!

Due to health reasons I can't have any if it, but I'll enjoy it virtually!

hope you all have a lovely Afternoon Tea, the boiler is ok & most importantly the GP appointment goes well xx

I love mini tarts and pies, preferably in shortcrust pastry, eg: smoked salmon or hot smoked salmon quiches, mini steak pies, perhaps in mini Yorkshire puddings, quail scotch eggs... 🌹

SummerLobelia · 14/07/2022 13:01

Ooh! Vol-auvents. I have little cases from christmas already and need to use them.

Thanks for all the ideas.

Thanks @WinterMusings for the good wishes. Thanks

I have now set upon (although my list is growing bigger all the time with such lovely ideas);

Sandwiches;
-cucumber with herbed cream cheese
-ham and butter
-tomato and boursin which is DH's favourite
-egg and cress
-cheese and jersey black butter
-prawn and seafood stick mayo (I am the only one who will eat it)

Other
-vol-auvents- possibly with a corn and bacon creamy sauce

Sweet
-scones!! and jam and cream
-brownie bites
-coffee and walnut cake
-new york cheesecake bites (DS1's favourite)

Fruit
-strawberries and raspberries

Boiler man is in the kitchen sighing and looking concerned so I think baking is out today so I have sent the other memebrs of the family out to buy the sweet things.

I did an afternoon tea for the Saturday dinner on the jubilee weekend. We had smoked salmon and cream cheese, ham and mustard, beef and horseradish and cheese & cucumber finger sandwiches with crusts cut off and some mini sausage rolls.
For sweet treats I made scones and also some puff pastry cream slices which I saw on Instagram and were super easy. Basically get a sheet of ready rolled puff pastry, cut into rectangles, brush with milk and sprinkle with sugar and baked until crisp. Let go cold and split in half. Spread jam on the bottom slice, pipe whipped cream on top and add some sliced strawberries. Top with the other slice and dust with icing sugar. Everyone loved them. I must make them again.

longtompot · 14/07/2022 13:19

ps never heard of Jersey black butter before, but looked it up and it sounds amazing!

SummerLobelia · 14/07/2022 15:14

Oh it is. I love all the spices in it. The liquorice addition is right up my street.

GP appointment done and dusted. Turns out some worrying test results combined with a worrying lump were not related and one can be resolved with some medication and the other was just a cyst. So I am happy and might add some sparkling wine to the afternoon tea. :)

Boiler man needs to come back tomorrow.
