Can I make these with ice lolly moulds?

This is probably a ridiculous question, but I'm really bad for assuming something will work out fine and then it doesn't..

I am borderline obsessed with the fancy orange ice lollies you get in supermarkets in summer. My lolly of choice is the Aldi Valencian orange lollies, which are £1.69 for four. Some evenings I eat a box myself 😬

Could I just buy nice orange juice and some ice lolly moulds and make my own? Does fresh OJ freeze in a straightforward way?

I'm aware this is probably so obvious you're left shaking your head at me, but this is exactly the kind of situation I get wrong!

We do it all the time. Fresh juice, diluting juice, smoothie, gin. You name it we've done it.

I can't see why it wouldn't work out ok!

Ooh I am going to order the moulds then! Thanks

It is recommended to add a little sugar and some lemon juice but basically yes.

The only problem you will have is getting them to freeze quickly enough so that they don’t form ice crystals and have the splintering in them which is unpleasant.
it’s very hard to do in normal freezers.

my advice would be to put the orange juice into the freezer for an 30 mins to an hour, shaking it every so often so that it is super cold when you put it in the moulds, oh and have the moulds in the freezer for a while too so they are very cold.
it’ll give it the best chance of freezing quickly.

The sugar dissolved in is meant to produce a slightly softer freeze preventing them turning into ice cubes.
But I'm not sure if it actually works.

That's really helpful, thanks!

Can you make them cheaper than that price tho?

if maybe try to eat less than 4 per day
(saying that I ate 2x cookie sandwich ice creams from aldi in one sitting and they have 0 health benefits so no judgement!)

CaptainCallisto · 13/07/2022 22:06

I made myself spiced rum and orange juice lollies over the weekend and they came out fine (and so, so good).

FuckingHateRats · 13/07/2022 22:07

Hmm I think so? A litre of nice juice is £1 in Aldi. And they don't sell these in the other three seasons! I get withdrawal every autumn 😂
