End of term theme park trips during heatwave.

Are any schools cancelling? I guess they wouldn’t obtain refunds but surely it’s unwise to take year groups of children to theme park this Mon/Tue?

My son is due to attend and am considering keeping him at home, ‘sick’.

Anyone else?

They'll be fine! Lots of water, lots of cool drinks, an 8 hour suncream in the morning and more to put on when they're sweated / been on water rides.

Can almost guarantee they won't even notice the heat.

SeanMean · 13/07/2022 21:29

My son went on Tuesday and had a ball!

What is the educational value of a trip to a theme park?

I believe it’s called fun.

Mine went, it was fine. I sent dc with lots of frozen mini drinks cartons and huge bottle of iced water, cap and sunscreen.

Heatwave2022 · 13/07/2022 21:56

Thanks all.

Mine went to Alton towers on Monday, she came back so poorly she went to bed and didn't get up for 12 hours. We sent her with water, sun cream etc but it was too long in the heat.

hartof · 13/07/2022 22:00

She also only managed to do 2 rides as it was so busy.

Mariposista · 13/07/2022 22:20

Yeah, you are going to be your son’s favourite person on Earth for denying him such a fun day out with all his mates because of the weather.

Newnormal99 · 13/07/2022 22:27

My y10 daughter had an educational trip Tuesday involving the tube and they have cancelled.

My dd did her DofE within spitting distance of Alton on Sunday and Monday and she was completely fine. As were the other 63 children. Ten hours of walking on each day.

Maybe your dd didn't drink enough or keep her hat on.

hartof · 13/07/2022 22:52

@LoosieGoosie that's lucky for them then isn't it. Everybody copes with heat differently.

saleorbouy · 13/07/2022 23:01

If it was Orlando you wouldn't think twice.
Apply sunscreen, and make sure that they take plenty of water etc.
I'm sure they'll manage, other people do in hotter countries!

Heatwave2022 · 13/07/2022 23:02

@Mariposista its not our normal summer weather though is it. Apparently temps may reach the hottest this country has ever seen. I also never said I was cancelling, I was asking for opinions.

@hartof sorry your daughter was poorly. This is what I’m worried about.

Cultural capital. Some might say more educational than a standard lesson.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 13/07/2022 23:11

We went to a theme park in Spain when it was 43 degrees and have been to Florida too so I can’t gm understand the panic. Just send water, a hat and sun cream!

Quackpot · 13/07/2022 23:19

Not trip but sports days, Mon and Tues. Bloody stupid. Class of teens (all with SEN, some with epilepsy, most with walking difficulties) doing sports in 30+°c. I think not. If the warnings still in force she'll be staying home infront of a fan with ice lollies

Heatwave2022 · 13/07/2022 23:31

@NeedAHoliday2021 Queuing for theme park rides in 43 degrees is my idea of hell.

@Quackpot I don’t blame you.

By a degree or two. You probably wouldn't notice it was much hotter if no one told you.

In the grand scheme of the world and global warming its alarming, for the sake of a school trip to a fun park it's hardly newsworthy.

They'll be hot and have a great time. Get them on the log flooms

SpringRainbow · 14/07/2022 04:43

I will start of by saying I really don’t do heat so I am anxious about the hot weather.

That being said it doesn’t seem to bother my kids in quite the same way. They are still running around like lunatics given the chance.

The heat had got to them as they are sweaty and have no appetite at the moment.

However, they don’t seem to ‘feel’ the heat like I do. They are quite happy to run around out in the sun where I am seeking out shade and anywhere that has a fan/ AC.

I am worried about my kids going to school on Monday/ Tuesday. Especially since they have so much planned for the kids. When I look at what they have planned all I can think about is how much I would hate it in this heat.

However, because they have so much planned both mine are looking forward to everything so they will want to go.

My kids school really are trying to make up for everything they haven’t really been able to do the last couple of years.

Wheretheskyisblue · 14/07/2022 06:00

The school have cancelled ours which was due to be on Monday becuase of the heat. It is for much younger children though.

Snowraingain · 13/07/2022 20:44

I’m taking my class across London on two tubes on Monday. We won’t get a refund if we cancel.
Thoughts and prayers welcome.

Honestly? Cancel
it is 36 degrees in london
that is just reckless

36 degrees forecast for Monday when I am in the south east

InWalksBarberalla · 14/07/2022 06:11

These UK 'heatwave' temperatures are going to become the new summer UK norm so may as well let the kids start adjusting now.

User5386509 · 14/07/2022 06:11

Probably would be worse stopping at home in a boiling hot house with a DM fretting all day about the heat

CeeceeBloomingdale · 14/07/2022 06:13

jgw1 · 13/07/2022 21:14

Oh, I thought learning new things was fun?

Oh faux surprise that kids can find a theme park fun as clearly only learning should be fun. Fun isn't mutually exclusive, fun can be had outside the learning environment too 🙄

OP if your child thinks it will be fun and wants to go I don't see the issue. Just supply suncream, hat and hydration and be thankful you don't have to go yourself.
