Neighbours dog has been barking since 9am

My neighbours dog (Street of semis, but not attached to me) has been barking since 9am this morning. It's not a frantic bark, it's more of a woof woof... Then a few seconds later woof woof... But its constant. She isn't home as I've knocked on. My mind keeps jumping to horrible conclusions. Should I do anything about it? Not that I know what I can do! I just think it's so warm today, how could the dog even have the energy to carry on barking for so long?

PS I'm posting from a place of concern for the dog or for the neighbour (?) not because the noise is bothering me. I think it's only a small dog so it's not a loud bark. I've never actually seen it...

There's loads of reasons it could be barking. Seperation anxiety/can see or hear something interesting out of the window/ playing with a toy left for it.

I'm unsure what it is you think you could or should do if she is not home?

Could it be too hot or has no access to water?

Yes maybe? I don't know that's what's frustrating!

@frequency I guess I just didn't realise that dogs could bark for 10 solid hours. I thought they would run out of energy or go to sleep 🙈 I've never had a dog...

Can you look in the windows or letter box. see if you can see what it's barking at.

Could you put a bowl of water through a gate or something? If you don’t think the dog has access to some. Is worrying if he’s been literally barking all day. Hope the owner comes back soon- make sure they are aware how upset the dog has been

If you are genuinely concerned about the well being of the neighbour, you can ask police to perform a welfare check, if they are vulnerable/elderly/car still in the driveway and you are concerned they may be sick and need emergency attention.

If it's just an idle fear then not to be recommended!

Mine could and would bark for 10 hours if I went out for ten hours and there was something going on outside for 10 hours. Seperation anxiety would also cause prolonged periods of barking.

I'd just keep an eye on it and if it's still doing it tommorrow maybe keep a close eye on the property and ask neighbours or any friends/family of the neighbour if everything is ok.

We had a local case recently where someone was suddenly rushed to hospital and had no one to contact to collect/care for their dog. Eventually neighbours managed to get to the hospital and get his keys and permission to enter the property to care for the dog. It was placed with a foster carer until the man recovered. There isn't really a social services for dogs and the man didn't realise local charities and rescues would have helped him.

The most likelu secenario is that she's gone out for the day and the dog has seperation anxiety.

I think the dog is upstairs, that's where the sound of the barking is coming from. When I knocked on I tried to have a little look through the front window but the blinds are shut. The neighbour isn't old or infirm and doesn't drive. I don't see her very often as she's out a lot. Im assuming she usually takes the dog with her but I've never seen it! I've seen one of the dogs but she said she also has another smaller one

It's probably used to the run of the house and has accidentally locked itself in a bedroom. Or has been placed in the bedroom because the owner has gone out.

A young and determined dog could muster enough energy to bark for ten hours with ease. There wouldn't necessarily have to be something horribly wrong for this to happen.

Thank you. I need a voice of calm at the minute due to the state of my mind!

It's stopped now (at 9pm) not sure if anyone got home or not cos I didn't see. I guess so.
