University interview prep

Can anyone give DS some guidance?

He has an interview for a maths foundation course at a top uni and has an interview. He left school (at 16) 3 years ago. We live in a world where, despite the MN seeming to think almost everyone goes to uni, no one does. He really didn't want to continue in education at 16. He's not at school so doesn't have them to advise him. He's worked FT for the last 3 years.

I have a degree, but I did it by distance learning as a mature student. I am quite good at job interviews, but can't quite picture how this goes. He's been told 40 mins.

He got very good GCSEs at a very poor school. He doesn't have Alevel or equivalent (they know this but have offered him an interview) and he doesn't have any of the extra curricular clubs you might expect from a posher background.

What he does have is a genuine interest in the subject. The application has come about because he's been reading academic papers and solving Alevel maths problems, self taught, for fun!

So, how can I best support him for the interview? We've Googled and he's working on preping some answers for the standard questions, but I feel like we're missing something. Will he be expected to talk about maths?

It's possible I'm over thinking 😆

He sounds to me like he's better suited to university education than lots who have done their A Levels! They'll want to see passion for the subject, and it sounds like he has this. I would encourage him to talk about all the stuff he's been doing in his spare time, to me that shows a proper interest. Also emphasise his maturity in holding a full time job and organisational skills from that etc.
The good thing about foundation degrees is they are all about preparing students for the challenge of the full degree so it will get him up to the same academic level as this coming the more traditional route.
Good luck to him!

Not a lot of help I'm afraid but I just wanted to wish him lots of luck

I'm sure his passion and enthusiasm will be evident in his interview
