help me with breakfasts

crochetmonkey74 · 13/07/2022 13:11

Im 47, fat and perimenopausal.
I need to do something about it - lunch and dinner I have sorted but I am about to go into a busy Summer.

I need breakfasts that I will eat out and about after my daily swim and yoga sessions - so they need to be packed into a tote bag and taken with me.
I definitely can't eat before I go

Here are my ideas so far so you can see what my kind of tastes are (think dry food and sweet not savoury)

Banana and Nature Valley bar (calories OK but bar is full of sugar)

Oatcakes, apple and peanut butter (worried about not being careful enough with portions of peanut butter)

Overnight oats

Tortilla Wrap or sandwich thin with PB &J

As you can see I am not very adventurous! I don't like eggs, am trying to make sure that breakfast is my only carbs of the day (this works for me)

Left to my own devices, my ideal breakfast would be thick granary toast, butter and marmalade so I am considering a small jam or marmalade sandwich but that hasn't got protein

There must be something I am missing- can you help me??

Any ideas gratefully recieved!

I'm currently having 2 Oatibix in a tub (sometimes) with raisins, and adding a kids Yazoo chocolate milk and a banana and/or kiwi, berries etc once at work. The Oatibix + milk are 292 cals then build from there.

Overnight oats is the healthiest. My husband takes his in a small pot with a screw top. He, usually, adds a few blueberries or half a banana (I eat the other half).

Yes like this idea as a change from the oats

Ahh posted wrongly, meant to say I like the idea of Oatibix as a change from plain oats and I could get the small bananas and top my overnight oats with lots of berries etc

Do you really want to eat as soon as you wake up? One of my most favourite things about low carbing is that I can easily skip breakfast and not notice any difference on my hunger.

I wore a blood sugar monitor which confirmed that eating anything early in the day raises my blood sugar significantly.

So not like the information I absorbed about food growing: it really suits me. I first came across it in the podcasts from Dr Chatterjee / Tim Spector

Yodaisawally · 13/07/2022 14:41

I can't get on with overnight oats. Do you need breakfast? I mostly skip it or have a protein shake if I've been working out.

Slice of frittata or flourless muffin!

MrszClaus · 13/07/2022 14:43

I love overnight oats with a few berries / jam bits plopped in, or overnight cheesecake things (where you mix a protein yoghurt with smushed weetabix and make a topping like a cheesecake, so chocolate or biscoff or fruit - there will be loads on Google!) that transport well. Or a smoothie with banana / açai / peanut butter in an insulated tumblr so stays cold.

Skipping breakfast is batshit. It’s known as the most important meal of the day for a reason. Skipping it leads to junk food cravings and often a failure to lose weight as a result. It’s not a good idea, don’t do this. In lots of other countries it’s the biggest meal of the day and I think that’s right, it sets you up for the day after all.

Greek yoghurt and berries with a bit of honey is one of my favourite breakfasts. Sometimes I have muesli and Greek yoghurt.

HandbagsnGladrags · 13/07/2022 14:45

Sugar free granola with 0% fat greek yoghurt & berries. The yoghurt has protein.

It’s all well and good until the adrenal fatigue and thyroid problems kick in because skipping breakfast means you’re running on cortisol. Ask me how I know! (7 years low carb ruined my health)

Breakfast is super important for women to balance hormones. Carbs and protein should be the priority.

Oats and a skyr yoghurt with berries? That’s protein and carbs sorted.

EllenWaiteourkid · 13/07/2022 14:47

I am not out and about, but my summer breakfast and winter come to think of it Grin is natural yoghurt with raspberries and flax seeds or sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds, you would need to keep them in a separate pot, they are also a good source of fibre.

Overnight oats and keep changing the add ons

Berrries
Banana
Stewed apple and cinnamon
Stew frozen fruit/berries to make a compote
Tinned fruit
Dried fruit
Plain

I'd have this at least 3 or 4 times a week and usually make up double amount and keep half in the fridge

crochetmonkey74 · 13/07/2022 14:57

I will definitely investigate protein yogurt!

The bagel thins aren't too bad, add cream cheese and smoked salmon for protein.

This is a great one!
Bagels, cream cheese, tomatoes and onion with loads of black pepper is a real favourite of mine anyway!

There is ever more information coming out to suggest that people's reaction to foods really is individual. What suits one person may not suit another individual.

The key is to find something that suits you. OP may of may not want to eat breakfast, it may or may not suit them.

There appear to be very few universal truths in the world of nutrition

Just get 5% Fage you don't need a 'protein' yogurt.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 13/07/2022 15:21

Sorry missed the sweet bit. You could still have the bagel thins with a nut butter (mix it up with cashew or almond butter). Or go with cream cheese and either raspberries or strawberries - a kind of cheesecake vibe!

FinallyHere · 13/07/2022 15:21

I really enjoy the taste of a bagel. Sadly for me they raise my blood sugar levels faster than almost anything, including white sugar.

Sigh.

Thanks for the tip- I am a bit confused in the world of yoghurt- it's not a normal purchase

OP posts:
FinallyHere · 13/07/2022 15:26

Important thing to look out for in yoghurt is the amount of sugar and whether they contain any 'live' culture.

Any supermarket carries loads of sugary yoghurt. Finding one with love culture is not so easy. Fage is one, other own brand ones may be better value.

It's the thing that works the quickest and most successfully for me - which is what I want for my Summer- it won't be a longer term thing although I hope to go lower carb

At the moment my portions are too big and I do love carbs
