Did you do something quite drastic for solely your looks and feel good about it?

I have just read on another thread where a poster said she hated something about her looks but has come to accept it, as getting surgery to fix it was wrong. Should people be accepting of things that make them feel self conscious because it's only about looks and self esteem and isn't a health concern? Did you change anything about the way you looked for non health related reasons? Is it the best thing you have ever done or do you just focus on something else now? Is it the best money you have ever spent or a total waste that you regret?

Trying to weigh up if I should pay around 1k (by 1 small surgical removal and a small dental intervention) to fix something that has meant decades of self consciousness and low self esteem. First time in my life (at grand old age of 43) that I have ever had the means to afford even contemplating it. Thanks if you take the time to reply.

I had a small lump removed from my face, completely benign. Cost £800. Am very pleased I did. I would never have botox or reshape anything but pleaded I had this done.

RudsyFarmer · 14/07/2022 07:18

If you can afford to fix something that makes you miserable you should absolutely do that. Assuming the risks are wre in your favour.

FulhamPalaceGardens · 14/07/2022 08:29

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer I'd like to ask you a few questions about the lower face-lift. How good were the results? How long are the effects expected to last? Was it painful? What was the recovery time? Would you recommend the person, or clinic that you used? Thanks.

I’ve had Botox but it went a bit wrong the last time (puffy inner eyes, now droopy hooded eye, more on one side) so I’m not sure I’ll have it again.

I’ve had braces, which are good but instead of crooked teeth I now have an overbite which I’m not too happy with.

I will have blepharoplasty at some point and ideally have my overbite fixed.

I'm 50, my hair thinned due to early menopause which didn't change with HRT & a lot fell out due to Telogen Effluvium as well. The hair that is growing back following the TE phase is very weak & snaps off very easily.
I have seen a trichologist/dermatologist & I've also been diagnosed with female pattern hair loss & my hairline is receding.
I'm keeping an eye on it but will happily pay out for hair plugs if it gets too much.
I'm aware it sounds vain but I look in the mirror & don't recognise myself. If you look in photos even from only 3 years ago, it is noticeable.
If you didn't know me before, I don't think you'd notice but I asked my best friend of 35 years to be completely honest with me & to her, yes it is obvious.
I'm relieved I had a mop of very thick hair to begin with!

CherryRipe1 · 14/07/2022 16:38

Good heavens @MenopauseSucks not vain at all, you should do whatever you need/want to raise your self esteem. Sorry to hear your hair woes. Have you tried minoxidil (Regaine)? My hair is a bit thin due to an autoimmune problem & looking at some options.

giddygallopgirl · 14/07/2022 22:14

If its a mile definitely get it removed. I'm baffled by people who have moles when they could afford to have them removed. A small scar is much better than a mole.

MenopauseSucks · 15/07/2022 07:14

@CherryRipe1

I have psoriasis so couldn't try Rogaine - I thought my scalp was going to fall off after the first application!
I believe there are minoxidil tablets I could try but I take shedloads of other meds.
Again I'm fortunate I had really thick hair to begin with plus I had an extremely narrow forehead. The joke was I could never have a brow lift as my eyebrows would end up in my hairline & I wouldn't have a forehead left!
So this is why to people who don't know me it looks normal-ish but the difference is obvious to those who know me.

I would have stuff done if I had the money.
I was gifted eye laser surgery and not wearing glasses has been fantastic.

Stretchandsnap · 15/07/2022 07:35

I had laser eye surgery at 43 to correct my (quite severe) short sightedness as I was starting to need varifocals and I couldn’t face reading glasses on top of contact lenses. Had a blended vision solution that cost 6k and has been the single best thing ever.

BoJoGoGo · 15/07/2022 07:54

Laser eye surgery
Tummy tuck
Regular botox and fillers
2 dental implants not for comestic reasons but so I could chew.
All totally worth it, the best money I’ve ever spent. I think anything to make you feel better about your body is worth it, you are with your body 24/7.

Fluffybaker · 15/07/2022 08:48

Weight loss surgery, breast lift and augmentation and brachioplasty (arm lift). I was planning on a tummy tuck and thigh lift too but after the last two I decided I was done. No regrets. All positive results. It was a complete investment in me. I felt happy and confident for the first time in years.

tigerbear · 15/07/2022 09:11

@Evivie may I ask how you went about finding a good clinic for that procedure? I really want this done too, as have quite a few sun spots.

rnsaslkih · 15/07/2022 09:13

Those two things are perfectly acceptable to get fixed.

StrangeCondition · 15/07/2022 09:27

I haven't but I so want to but can't really afford it. I've lost a lot of weight and have loose skin which doesn't massively bother me as I can dress to hide it, but I have some under my chin which really depresses me. I avoid having my picture taken because it looks so unsightly, which is a shame as I've just been on a trip of a lifetime and there's no pictures with me in it Sad

None of this sounds very "drastic". Most of it just sounds like routine procedures to fix an issue or maintain one's body much as one maintains one's house! (In the wise words of Anthea Turner)

I'm 39. I get forehead botox. I've signed up for thread vein removal for round my nose. I have good teeth but would get them sorted if I needed to. And absolutely no way would i walk around with any moles which were unsightly.

Ihaveaquestionn · 15/07/2022 11:38

I had breast implants and have never regretted them

LoveBugBride · 15/07/2022 11:40

I had braces at 30 and double jaw surgery at 33 so basically both jaws broken and rearranged to correct my bite.

I have never regretted it for a second and it was hellish recovery. I am so happy with my 'normal' face now. I highly recommend doing whatever it is you are thinking of.

CherryRipe1 · 15/07/2022 23:00

@MenopauseSucks Oh that's a shame. I've read some studies that rosemary oil is as effective as minoxidil, maybe
gentler and safer and cheaper! Think it would need mixing in a carrier oil. Could your hair loss be down to the psoriasis (autoimmune)?
