Bedbugs help!

My mum is quite vulnerable (mental health) and is in council housing.

She has found she has bedbugs. She has the bites and is frightened of the whole thing. A google told her treatment cost £1000 which neither she or I have.

What can we do? I told her to phone the council (council house) but they just told her it was a tennants problem after she plucked up the courage to ask.

She does have a very crowded bedroom and unbelievable amounts of clothes (not quite hoarding as she periodically gets tid of some - she has a small room double bed and wardrobe/dressing table no other space)

I dont have 1k to lend her (realistically it would be a gift anyway) . She is on benefits and lives hand to mouth.

She is making herself ill with worry and I truly don't know what to do.

As for treatment - how do we know a website/trader is genuine or good. Anyone can put up a website and they're all so expensive.

A google suggests its hard to eliminate yourself.

What do I do!? Help!

I am a LL and after some tenants got a second hand bed and brought bedbugs into property. I also told tenants they would have to pay to resolve it as they were not there prior to tenants buying the bed. I did help them sort it though. They threw bed and mattress away. They emptied bedroom completely. They hoovered bedroom repeatedly. They cleared out other room as bedbugs just migrate. They got in person who fumigated but they all had to stay out of house for 6 hours. When they went back to hey hooved again, I let them borrow my carpet cleaner and be steam mop. They cleaned and every surface and washed all bedding and clothing, even stuff that had been in drawers and curtains. All soft furnishings must be washed. All drawers were vacuumed and washed out. They did not come back and they bought new bed and matress.

What makes her think they're bed bugs and not fleas? I'd have a good spray with Indorex first.

MrsP she hasn't got any animals at all - and no jumpy things.

(She had a poor kitten that had fleas when I was young - I went to visit her amd they jumped onto my leg it was awful)

Im assuming she'd know/its the marks on the mattress but Ive not been there too look.

How long ago was that, the eggs can lay dormant for 2 years iirc?

BugsInTheBed · 13/07/2022 08:26

About 25 years ish and in a different house. She doesn't have any pets at all so I'd be surprised if its fleas.

I might be able to drive over at the weekend but I'm not sure what use I will be!

The lyingbdormant things is scary though isnt it. Whether fleas or whateverm its amazing everyone doesnt have bugs/live/whatever.

She's read bedbugs cam lie dormant for 4 months so even if you replace bedding etc the ones hiding out can return a few months later. It does sound impossible!

Google says steam kills them off so your best bet would be to buy a steam cleaner ,they aren't too expensive and a couple of cans of Indorex for the house too, don't use the Indorex on the bed.
