4.5 yo really sick

DD (4.5 yo) has been really really sick since Friday so we are entering the 5th day of high fever (39°-40 °), which in the evenings doesn't even go down with medication. She's been on Nurofen and Calpol alternating every 4 hours, yet in the evenings I'm having to give her both doses almost at the same time as the fever doesn't go down below 39 ° with just one of the meds.

I'm awake in the middle of the night as she wakes up couphing, gagging and being really unwell every 30 mins. I'm sick of it and really exhausted.

Gp examined her and said it's only a viral infection and should go away soon.

It's really hot where we are and that doesn't help matters, all windows open all night and temp in the rooms upstairs doesn't go below 25-26°.

F..ing nightmare. Can anyone relate? We've not been through this before, usually fever doesn't last for more than 3 days when she has an infection.

I think I would be going back and getting them to check her again.

That's a long time with a fever especially if she's not particularly well hydrated and in hot weather

Rodion · 12/07/2022 14:15

I'd also be getting concerned about dehydration now. Is she drinking and passing
urine?

lemmein · 12/07/2022 15:29

I'd take her back- 5 days is a long time to have an high temperature with no relief. Is she vomiting/diarrhoea?

Did they do a urine test? My DD has had a fever lasting that long twice in her life, first when she had Covid and second when she had a UTI (which initially got missed because she also had a cold). If she's still not better I'd be taking her back to the GP.

endofthelinefinally · 12/07/2022 15:46

Are you giving her regular ice lollies? And dioralyte?
I agree with pp you need medical advice, but the above might help a bit.

greenacrylicpaint · 12/07/2022 15:48

has she had a covid test?

HSKAT · 12/07/2022 15:48

What did the GP do?
Check urine? Check ears/throat etc?

I would be going back as that's a long time for a temp.

endofthelinefinally · 12/07/2022 15:48

IME GPs always assume that if you don't call them back then everything has got better.

SirVixofVixHall · 12/07/2022 15:51

The only time my dds had a temp for that long was with Swine Flu.
It might be Covid, or Flu.
I agree she needs checking now. The GP came out for dd with Swine Flu.

Madmog · 12/07/2022 16:37

Do a covid test, so you know one way or the other if she has that and will be armed with that knowledge one way or the other. Then phone GP or 111 if out of hours and explain you're concerned that DD isn't getting any better and the temperatures recorded.

Thank you everyone. She was very unwell this morning, fever would not go down with maximum of meds so I took her to A&E. Turns out she has tonsillitis and has been given antibiotics for 10 days. How did the GP miss that yesterday evening??

@Wanttogetwell, because the GP didn't bloody well look. DC2 was sent away from A&E late at night recently after being given antibiotics for a urine infection (traces of blood).
I took them back the next day - it was appendicitis. The senior surgeon they saw was hopping mad that the doctor the night before hadn't taken bloods.

endofthelinefinally · 12/07/2022 16:57

Oh poor little soul. Tonsillitis is really nasty. Get a big box of basic fruit ice lollies and just let her have as many as she wants. They really help, especially to get the antibiotics down. Jelly, custard, yogurt are much easier to swallow than liquids and far less painful.

And sleeping downstairs

Oh no, sorry to hear that 😳. You'd expect a doctor to do a basic check.

Yes, tonsillitis is nasty! She had it once when she was much younger and it was a nightmare. She gagged on everything today, even yogurt and ice lolly 😬. But she's had a tiny bit of dinner now so maybe she is on the mend.

That's really crap and I am annoyed on your behalf. Poor kid

Wanttogetwell · 12/07/2022 22:11

The GP checked her tonsils yesterday and said they were large and a bit red but not enough to be tonsillitis 🙄. He was very relaxed and totally confident it's just a viral infection. The 111 were useless too.

You really need to trust your gut and push for everything. Breaks my heart that DD has to go through all this nightmare for almost 5 days.

How is dd today?

Wanttogetwell · 13/07/2022 16:41

@Purplehonesty2 thank you for asking x

She is better today, no more fever which is amazing.

Last night the fever crept back in just before midnight but it went away with one dose of Nurofen. And she slept through the night for the first time in what felt like ages.

She is still not eating much, a bit tired, but definitely on the mend. Keeping her off nursery until Monday.

Oh I'm glad to hear she's turned a corner. You will be feeling much better too after a good sleep.
