How do other plan on making it through winter?!

Just venting really but also looking for any tips!

Cannot believe the price we are going to be paying.. or are even paying just now for gas/electric. We have gone from a £150 tariff a month the start of the year to now looking at paying £500+ a month in Jan2023 according to Martin Lewis. If we didn’t have a little one I would be happy to bloody freeze but our LO turns one in winter, it’s not fair to thermal her upto the max… but jeez it really worries me where we are plucking this extra cash from. I return to work just before winter but my return will literally just be paying for our heating/electric! When does this end!

We will manage because we can but it’s so worrying especially for the elderly and disabled people, we never have the heating on overnight never have and we have lived all over the world just heated throws and blankets

Adversity · 12/07/2022 01:58

If it wasn’t for DH we would really be fine. DS and I have some sort of weird internal thermostat which means we rarely get cold. It does also mean we hate and despise hot weather.

Thermals, slippers, jumpers, fingerless gloves, warm socks and Oodie round the house. Electric throw blanket for the couch. Electric blanket, brushed cotton sheets and two duvets on my bed. Oh and lots of tea - I keep a 1 litre thermos filled.

Wow, I can't believe you've gone from 150 to over 500 a month! Bloody heck soon people are going to start burning chairs in the fireplace and all sleep together in the living room to keep warm.

Most things have been said already. Lots of layering. I have been replacing the seals on my doors and windows, it is cheap and easy to do. I have filled in gaps and caulked where needed. I already have thick thermal curtains, but they are invaluable.

We’re also going to aim for the ‘heat the person not the house’ theory so layering, blankets, etc. I’m worried about the long term implications of cold and damp and it’s effect on our property though but that is something to deal with after we’ve got through this I guess.

OP could you heat one room and mainly keep your little one there if it gets very cold?

Yeah, it won't be too good for the house, but if you make sure the house is ventilated it'll help and run the central heating (if you have it - if not some kind of heating) a bit if you can possibly afford to. You don't want to causing damage, expense & hassle if it can be at all avoided.

hope you all stay cosy x

Op I don't know

Hot water bottles are absolutely amazing
I grew up in a freezing house! So definitely get lots of those.

A few years ago I also brought some electric blankets.

However...one DC gets asthma, not sure about her breathing whether cold air would trigger her.

Will the bills ever come down??

Summerwhereareyou · 12/07/2022 07:27

Impractical,

Very very good point re seal's.
Our bathroom window used to whistle! It's amazing what some simple cheap sealant can do.

Also proper lined curtains, yes. I grew up with heavy lined velvet curtain's.

Unfortunately our curtains poles don't stay in the wall well so we have light curtains but we need thicker ones

The cap is looking at around £3.3k in October. 🤮🤬
It'll be increasing because of Bulb going bust.

I'm disabled and the cold makes me really really unwell and I happen to live up north where it gets down to -10 in a crappy house with not even a insulated roof because the roof tiles are coming off and my agency can't get hold of my landlord to fix it even though it's a death trap waiting to happen as the roof tiles can fall off at any point.
I really don't know what I'm going to do. Freeze to death or starve to death is the two options.

Oh and I also have two disabled kids. Makes me fucking furious that the government is to busy with their silly little election for PM than sorting things that actually matter.

Where are people buying thermal curtain's from

Lovelydovey · 12/07/2022 07:50

I bought thermal linings from Dunelm this week / useful to keep rooms cool in the summer too.

You can by a thermal lining layer to add to your usual curtains on amazon. You just thread it to your curtains with curtain hooks. It may work out cheaper than replacing the whole curtain.

Thank you @WinterMusings

Hope everyone keeps cosy too! Some really good ideas on here.

I seem to remember reading somewhere once (moneysavingexpert?) about people putting quilts up at windows to keep warm? I think they were purpose made quilted window coverings rather than just shoving a duvet in your bedroom window.
