Just volunteered to become the new PTA treasurer...

...Am I mad? Does anyone have any experience? I'm more than happy to spare a few hours a week doing admin/IT/paperwork... I'm more a back of house type person than a front of house. I'm not terribly keen on being centre stage at events etc. Will it suit me?

No experience but in the same boat as just volunteered for ours.

I did it for primary school. We set up a charity and the worst bit by far was filing accounts with the regulator. Other than that it wasn't very onerous.

Start looking for your replacement when your youngest goes into final year though, swapping names on the account etc is a faff.

Treasurer is the best role on the PTA as long as you're good with spreadsheets and admin. You'll be shielded from the usual PTA nonsense and you're volunteering so "doing your bit" and can avoid volunteering for anything else. Well done.

If there's a charity associated with the PTA then your job is a little harder as you'll need to submit paperwork to the Charities Commisson but you should be doing all the record keeping anyway. You'll need to be independently audited for that too, but at our school we have one of the kid's grandparents do it for free.

Our treasurer shows up for one AGM a year but is otherwise completely behind the scenes, just as she likes it!!

Being treasurer is fine, as long as you can deal with the charity submissions including gift aid claims.
The most difficult part was getting the signatories updated on the bank account!
Be aware that you will have to lug a ton of loose change to the xmas/summer fair - keep a spreadsheet of what each stall is charging (eg 10p/50p/£1), and a breakdown of the float given to them; have spare float to cash in any notes and keep a note of any stalls that were "under floated"; I guarantee each stall holder will want to know how "their" stall did so keep takings separate (useful to know which are most profitable too), you will spend many hours counting cash by yourself.
Best advice: get a coin counter, get card readers, do silent auctions with online bids.
Keep a paper/email trail of everything and never accept IOUs!
Do not expect people to understand, never mind appreciate, how much work you put in.

I've worked in an admin related field in the civil service for nearly 20 years, 10 years as an admin manager before my promotion last year which is related to finance & delivery. It's definitely more my cup of tea doing some spreadsheets than going to events! 😂

You’ll be fine. I’ve done it, as long as you’re methodical & maintain a system it’s straightforward. our treasurer only comes to the AGM!
