Recurring shingles - anyone had a similar experience??

I am experiencing recurring bouts of shingles. I would say in the last two years I've had at least eight or nine episodes, and in the last six months at least four.

They always appear on my face, in my eyebrows and near my eyes. Doctors have always been really concerned about this as it's very dangerous for the virus to get into eyes, apparently.

They used to appear as blisters but painless, now they're actually quite painful.

I have them again right now (last outbreak in May). The blisters are in my eyebrow, on my eyelid and under my eye. It feels like constant pins and needles in the area, with the odd stab of what feels like an electric shock.

Relatedly, I get cold sores (same virus) every month when I'm due or on my period.

The doc has done bloods and they've come back normal. I have a standing prescription for a lower dose of antivirals I take every month, in a bid to keep the cold sores at bay (it doesn't really work). Whenever I get an outbreak of shingles I get a prescription of a much higher dose to get rid quickly.

We're essentially in a place where the outbreaks are treated, but there's no further investigation of WHY I'm getting them so often.

Perhaps relatedly, my skin is very slow to heal and I'm very prone to allergic reactions.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone else has been in this position... And did it get better? Is there any hope for it receding? Is it worth pursuing privately?

To have these big outbreaks of blisters on my face so regularly is really getting me down. I hate leaving the house looking like this.

I wasn't living I the UK but I've had it twice, I recognised it right away and was given antivirals within 24 hours by the doctor. No pain no pins and needles nothing. First time across my middle front to back one side, second time, up one leg. After the second bout the Doctor gave me the vaccine even though I wasn't over 70 when they normally give it. I haven't had it again since.

I was going to suggest a vaccination? How horrid for you-totally sympathise as I got shingles due to being on immunotherapy which went a bit haywire.my eye hurt for 7 days before I had any blisters.Ended up in a and e as they were in my eyelashes as well as brows and scalp.Antiviral meds helped a lot but it was still really painful.i hope you get it sorted-

I used to get regular cold sores which coincided with my period. Since menopause and HRT I've had none. I put it down to being hormone related. Perhaps try going on the pill if you aren't already on it and if you are on it try a different pill? L lisine is good and I found lemon balm tea really helped too, it has antiviral properties. Also, ask your doctor to look into upping your antiviral dose and be ready to zap your shingles with strong antivirals at the first whisper.

I didn't even realise there was a vaccine! I'm off to investigate this now.

I know my friend had a similar problem and changed her diet (was vegan but started eating eggs) and found that she didnt keep getting it after that. Obviously not exactly hard evidence but thought it worth mentioning!

I've endured recurring bouts of Shingles for decades. It's a horrible condition, painful and debilitating.

I've been under the hospital's immunology clinic for about 10 years and had the vaccine about 6-7 years ago ('off label' as I'm not 70 or over). The vaccine didn't help with the severity of the outbreaks or the frequency. I took a prophylactic dose of anti virals every day for a couple of years too. That didn't help either.

I'm still under the immunology clinic (FWIW) and have a constant supply of anti virals that I take as soon as the tell tale tingling pain and feeling unwell starts.

The only thing that appears to help me is keeping stress levels as low as possible (not always achievable) and not consume too much sugar.

You have my sympathy. It really is a dreadful condition.
