I mean on the sunny side of the house.

Closed if in the sun. Open them later after the sun has moved round.

curtains closed windows open! Really helps.

AnotherRoadsideAttraction · 11/07/2022 07:55

Windows cracked a tiny bit, curtains/blinds/shades closed.

NoWeaponsOnTheTable · 11/07/2022 07:55

Closed otherwise you let in all the hot air, open later on when it starts to get cooler.

Yodaisawally · 11/07/2022 07:58

Blinds and windows closed on the sunny side open on the other. Swap around as the sun moves.

DiamondSnow · 11/07/2022 08:01

If the air outside is hotter than the air in your house, then close them.
If the air outside is cooler than the air in your house, then open them.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 11/07/2022 08:02

Both closed.

EtiquetteQuestion · 11/07/2022 08:38

Windows closed if the temperature outside is warmer than the temperature inside as otherwise you're just letting warmer air in, regardless of where the sun is.

TheSandgroper · 11/07/2022 08:47

West Australian here. Close your windows and curtains.

PirateAha · 11/07/2022 09:03

An array of answers which is why I couldn't decide 😅 but I think it makes sense on super hot days (25degrees at 9am here) to close the windows on the sunny side until the temperature outside is cooler than on-site

OP posts:
PirateAha · 11/07/2022 09:03

Inside. Not on-site.

Windows open and curtains closed.

Unless you have a proper air conditioning system inside, in which case you should close the windows too.

I lived in a Mediterranean country for 20 years and 33 to 35 degrees everyday was usual for July and August!

I've been wondering about opening up the loft hatch... downstairs in our house isn't too hot. Upstairs is too warm and didn't really cool last night. If I open the back door and the loft hatch (we have some ventilation tiles in the roof tiles) will that encourage some air flow through and upstairs hot air further up & out?

The loft is like a sauna by the end of the day so I don't really want any of that it inside the house though!

MaggieFS · 11/07/2022 10:20

I think windows open or closed depends on the nature of your house. Tropical and Mediterranean houses often have shutters of large overhangs to keep windows in the shade. We don't have those here, so as much as the outside air starts off warmer, the direct sun on the window glass causes a greenhouse effect and then inside ends up warmed if I don't open the windows.

Also windows open around the house means any breeze can pass through.

Curtains and windows closed on the sunny side. We’re SE/NW facing so it changes am/pm.
All windows open at night, to let some cooler air through. Upstairs gets like an oven - we’re in the SE. Thermometer outside the kitchen window (no sun on it) says 31.9 atm.
I’ve lived in much hotter climates so was once used to it but find it tiring now.
