Can anyone make sense of the upcoming cost of living payment?

I can't figure out who is getting it and when. Different sources say different dates, with some saying it'll be paid from the 14th of July, then others saying those on tax credits won't receive it until the autumn.

Does anyone have any idea of when those on tax credits are likely to get the first installment? Thanks

I thought Tax Credits people got the first payment in the Autumn, so it'll be late September onwards

I'm confused it really doesn't make sense thar every person claiming benefits will get the payments.

It's on the website www.gov.uk/guidance/cost-of-living-payment

Universal Credit claimants will get a payment of £326 between 14th-31st July and a payment of £324 in the Autumn

Tax Credits claimants will have a £326 payment in Autumn and a £324 payment in winter

Now I want to know why the payments are split into £326 and £324 and not two payments of £325, which is not the point of the thread I know.

Thank you. I hadn't seen the new HMRC info.

I wonder why there's different dates for universal credit and tax credits.

The 2 benefits get their money from a different pot so UC go first. So I believe.. Bit unfair imo.

Could it be because UC is recalculated every month whereas tax credits are on an annual renewal at the end of July so they want to make sure it's on the most up to date data?

But seeing as it's help towards bills that won't peak until after Christmas, it shouldn't matter when it is received as not keeping it until then might cause further problems down the line.

My advice to anyone receiving these benefits would be to put it in a Help to Save account. This has the double benefit of sidelining the money for higher winter bills, and it being eligible for the 50% Government top up (unless there's some sort of rule in place that prevents this, but I can't see how it would be if it's a cash payment. You would have to do some minor financial jiggery pokery to keep it separate to drip feed it in at the £50 pm rate, but anyone who can set this up will be able to benefit significantly in the long run.

It's quite simple if you come off social media and read it on the government website
