I can’t be bothered to form an opinion on the Tory leadership contest

I just realised there is no point paying attention as I/most of the country have no say in the matter anyway. All these launches and campaign posters, all aimed at, what, a couple of hundred thousand people? (I have no idea how many Conservative party members there are)

Also, I have been looking for some reason to hope the next PM will be a sensible person, which is pointless, obviously.

Time to start turning the radio off when the news comes on again…

I agree with you, OP! We have no say on it at all. And there are so many candidates at the moment. I think I will pay more attention when they have been whittled down somewhat.

AceofPentacles · 11/07/2022 06:08

I don't care because there is not one soundbite, policy or tax cut which would ever make me vote Tory, I just wish we could get a break from these corrupt bellends

Mumdiva99 · 11/07/2022 06:22

Same....I get no choice. I can't force a General Election. No point getting riled up over it. I have no faith in the Conservative party to 'do the right thing' as they let Boris stay for so long despite the evidence her was lying, breaking rules and generally not showing any integrity.

I feel exactly the same. What’s the point as it’s so undemocratic. And when the new leader comes in it’ll be “same shit different day” anyway.

FourTeaFallOut · 11/07/2022 06:31

200,000 members if the first hit on Google is accurate. I think it's interesting. I'm not a conservative member or voter but I think whether the new leader hails from the left or the right of the party and the issues they campaign on will give us a clue about what we are in for.

Same circus, different clowns

Good guess then!

I will read up on whoever wins, but not going to spend time on the dozen weirdos that are in the running.

It's a disgrace isn't it. I just want someone who is less likely to break international law and trash our reputation to the rest of the world. Is that so much to hope for? Feel like we are living in a parallel universe atm ConfusedConfusedConfusedConfused

Yeah, but you are going to need to know if you are stuck in the tent with a family-friendly party entertainer, Krusty the Clown or IT, it makes a difference.

Volterra · 11/07/2022 06:43

I feel the same. My Brother has just sent me anti Twitter stuff about one candidate and I just said it is in hands of a very small number of people.

RhymesWithAntelope · 11/07/2022 06:56

I agree

And if you're actually a member of the Tory party I imagine you're a full on Tory so the candidates will be hoping to appeal to the most Tory of Tories <shudder>

KonTikki · 11/07/2022 07:01

Our new PM will be elected by the same demographic who turned their collective back on integrity and truthfulness when electing Johnson.
I really don't believe that that the Tories have ever been in such a wretched position.
One entirely of their own making.
I have absolutely no confidence in their ability to make the right decision this time round.
I trust that the electorate will in the next General Election.

Lonelycrab · 11/07/2022 07:11

How many months of this preening, pretentious backstabbing charade have we got to endure? It’s not like there’s anything else going on in the world right now so let’s have a protracted Tory navel gazing contest. Meh.

User739267 · 11/07/2022 07:12

I might pay more attention when it's down to the final two, there are too many at the moment, are there usually this amount.

AyeUpMeDuck · 11/07/2022 07:13

As I understand it... Which is a limited understanding to say he least..

One MP, Sunak, says he's running and lays out his plans.
He'll need the backing of other MPs, up to 20 in the first voting round.
So the plans he's announced get.listened too by the general population and they could, if they were so inclined, contact the MP of their constituency and tell their MP to support Sunak or they won't be voted for again.

If enough constituents contact their MPs to voice who they want as PM, the MPs should back whom the constituents want.

That's how I think it's supposed to work... Maybe.

Kezzie200 · 11/07/2022 07:20

Not that we have any power but they should all declare when they first sent a VONC to Brady.

Be interesting to know when they first cared about the country and ethics over their own political ambition.

Even better, ask them in their debates, and see if they are still squirming and taking no responsibility for the actions they enabled.

cariadlet · 11/07/2022 07:22

They have all caused immense suffering by supporting Austerity. They use refugees and immigrants as scapegoats to deflect voters' anger and frustration away from themselves. They are running down public services.

Almost all have served in Johnson's cabinet.

I find them all contemptible for these reasons.

I just hope that whoever is elected recognises that Sex Matters and values preserving single sex spaces and safeguarding children.
That's the only positive thing about any of them.

This briefly made me think I should try to care, until I remembered that my MP tweeted about #backingboris in the last leadership election and I told him exactly how I felt about that and of course it made no difference.
