Brits nip to the shop to buy milk. What do Americans buy?

Fordian · 10/07/2022 22:19

As in, we nip down the local Tesco metro to buy milk, bread, wine or beer.

What would an American nip down to buy?

And how far away is if?

Mine's a 2 minute drive.

Guns.

SeaToSki · 10/07/2022 22:26

Well you are likely to do a Target run, or go to a store..not ‘pop to the shops’ 🤣

If I am going to stereotype
if you are on the East Coast, then maybe chips and dip and icecream with jimmies
If you are in California, maybe guacomole and impossible burgers
If you are in the mid west, steak, corn and beer (but likely to be buying at a farm stand as much as a local store)
The deep south - I’m not as familiar with, so couldnt say

Everywhere in urban places then 10 mins to 20 mins. But many rural areas you could drive for 1-2 hrs to get to a supermarket

A 2 minute drive?

<misses point - but fucking hell!>

MooseBreath · 10/07/2022 22:29

Not American, but Canadian here. We don't "nip to a shop". We "run to the grocery store". In my experience, it's typically for milk, bread, and coffee. Can't buy alcohol in grocery stores, only registered liquor stores (some exist as a separate shop in a grocery store, but not often). Gotta do booze and weed runs separately.

DannyNedelko · 10/07/2022 22:29

SeaToSki · 10/07/2022 22:26

..sigh…

Sigh... Much more likely to be buying ammunition.

MooseBreath · 10/07/2022 22:30

Oh, and usually a 5-10 minute drive at least.

Fordian · 10/07/2022 22:32

I miss drive thru bottlo's- Aussie bottle shops/off licences/alcohol stores 😂

SO handy! Big barns of places, you pull up, state what you want from the drivers seat, they load it in your car boot; you pay up and go.. 😂

Our nearest was a 10 minute drive away.

Moose how far/how common are the booze stores?

LifeExperience · 10/07/2022 22:33

I "run to the store," which is about a 10-minute drive, to buy cream for my coffee.

Fordian · 10/07/2022 22:36

You couldn't buy alcohol in a supermarket in Queensland, Australia; but bottle shops were plentiful.

And on the 80s, you could only buy alcohol at certain times of the week, so, for example, they'd have bin liners covering the booze of a Sunday Moring, til12 noon (?).

In Germany you go to the bakery for fresh bread, or the market for fresh meat and vegetables. They buy UHT milk and even their refrigerated milk lasts for weeks so you don't need to go midweek. But they tend to eat proper bread which goes stale within a couple of days. Bakeries are among a very select few stores which are allowed to open on Sundays (the others are petrol stations, pharmacies and flower stores, which includes garden centres, except the garden centre isn't actually allowed to sell anything unless you're buying it with flowers and it might legitimately be a gift Confused)

In Ontario, there's pretty much two in every neighbourhood. The Beer Store is usually massive and the LCBO (spirits and wine) can be big, or have a couple smaller ones around. My hometown is around 90,000 people and has 4, but there could be more now, I just don't live there.

BertieBotts · 10/07/2022 22:41

And fizzy water, must buy crates of fizzy water and beer to keep in your Keller.

stuckonanlnertrainagain · 10/07/2022 22:44

No bloody milk in our shop
Where are you shopping that you can just pick up milk? It is increasingly hard to find- worse that during lockdown

BackToWhereItAllBegan · 10/07/2022 22:45

I usually ending up running to the grocery store for food to grill (bbq) and some pints of ice cream for dessert, Jeni's brambleberry crisp is my current favorite!
It's less than a 5 minute drive for me, my grocery store is allowed to sell wine and beer but there's a liquor store next door which sells everything else.

Beakyok · 10/07/2022 22:48

I was once asked to leave the local off licence when I lived in a large city in Mid West America. When I queried why, the response was that I’d brought an under age person into the store with me and they could lose their licence. I had my 4 month old baby with me!😂😂

mathanxiety · 10/07/2022 22:52

I run out for fizzy water, bread, salad bits, milk, frozen pizza, frozen tortellini, avocados for DD3, boxes of tissues, allergy meds, and catfood. Dcat begs everyone for food and we often run out sooner than expected.
(American midwest - sorry to disappoint PP but no running out for beer, corn, or steak)

Many years ago I was visiting a friend in the Deep South. We went out at 1am to buy flour & chocolate chips to make cookies. Does that count?
(It was a 15 minute drive from her house)

mathanxiety · 10/07/2022 22:55

I have a little shopping basket on wheels so I don't drive for short supermarket runs. My closest supermarket is about 10 mins away on foot.

HerRoyalNotness · 10/07/2022 23:00

Went today after swim class in the same shopping strip (6 min drive) for candy for the cinema. Thought I’d save some money. Spent $30 then another $50 at the cinema. WTF?

have hidden the candy to save for future cinema trips.

trader joes is 9 mins away and I go for. Freezer snacks and their seasonal drinks, will sometimes buy salads and meat for dinner. Last run was $148

mathanxiety · 10/07/2022 23:02

Supermarkets here carry a full selection of beer, wine and liquor but the town where I live makes them close alcohol sales at 10pm, and cashiers under age 21 can't ring up alcohol.

However, they ring up items like balsamic vinegar or liquor from Eastern Europe with Cyrillic script or eastern European languages on the packaging without any problem 🤪

BlackeyedSusan · 10/07/2022 23:12

1 minute walk from ex's(when I am there dropping kids) buy milk peppers, snacks, frozen ready meal to tempt DS to eat. Icecreams

2 minute walk from here. (I don't bother, too lazy to walk the extra minute)

BritWifeInUSA · 11/07/2022 00:09

Almost 30 miles to the nearest anything for me. 75 miles to the nearest Target. 30 miles away is Safeway so we don’t “nip” there for anything. We go every 2 weeks. Dry goods and household items are delivered in bulk by FedEx. A fruit and veg box is delivered once a week. Every 2 weeks we go to Safeway for the other things. If we forget something or run out we just make do unless we are going that way for any reason (doctors appointment, etc).

We make most of our own food (bread, baked goods, dog food).

dreamingbohemian · 11/07/2022 00:17

East coast cities: you run to the store (5-15 minute walk) for bread or milk or beer

In some cities you might shlep instead of run :)

I remember the first time I said ',pop to the shop' to an American friend, they could not stop laughing
