My 10yo DS has straight hair - quite thick but sleek - it just hangs with no real body or movement to it. He wears it long to his shoulders but is forever pushing it out of his eyes.

School have had enough of the constant flicking and touching and say he needs it out of his face next academic year.

We've been googling hairstyles- he wants to keep some length but struggling to find a style that will keep it out of his face.

Any ideas???? Two barbers where we live and both will need to be told what style he wants - they won't suggest anything (and v rural so no other option with spending £££).

Thank you!

Can he not wear a head band like some sportsmen do?

MuddlingThroughLifeLittleByLittle · 10/07/2022 21:11

Tie it up?

SunflowerGardens · 10/07/2022 21:28

All I can think of is a mullet 😬

No headbands or buns etc allowed for boys at school.

Yes - all I can think of is a mullet too! And all the pics online involve wavy hair.

The school want it out his face but he isn't allowed a headband or to tie it up ? Ridiculous.
(Sorry that's not much help)

Rather sexist of them!

I have a DS with shoulder length hair and he uses a headband for PE to keep it off his face.

He has long-ish hair as with ASD, he loathes hair cuts, and has an awkward hair texture that suits being long and weighed down rather than defying gravity and sprouting like a dilapidated toilet brush.

Svara · 10/07/2022 22:06

Just tie it back in a low ponytail with a black elastic, they can't have a problem with that? If they have different rules about girls and boys hair then I'd be questioning why they were being sexist.

alexdgr8 · 10/07/2022 22:10

can't you object to their having different rules for boys and girls, that is surprising these days, and indefensible i think.
just say no.
tie it back in an unobtrusive manner.

Bingitty · 11/07/2022 11:32

It's a boys' school so no different rules. No "hair accessories" allowed. I'm not going to make a fuss on this one. There have been other issues to really care about. And DS' hair really need a change anyway!

My son has similar hair to your son's. Luckily his school don't really mind. He does want it cut every now and again and I usually do it shaved around the back and sides and then sort of long curtains at the front- long enough to just go behind his ears and then shorter at the back. This is the only photo I can find that sort of shows his hair cut but not his face! This is slightly grown out. Oh and he has a side parting so it doesn't look like 90s boyband curtains!

Thanks @Cotswoldmama - that's useful to see. Might try that and see if it stays behind his ears.

Put it in a bun and say he is Sikh so the style is for religious reasons.
I'd like to see them squirm their way out of that.

Bingitty · 11/07/2022 14:17

There would be exceptions for religious or other protected reasons but none apply here.

I'd really like him to have a better hairstyle. I can see where the school is coming from - the constant fiddling with his hair is annoying. And they really don't want to police the hair accessories - football colours etc.

Umm. They can’t actually differentiate like this between boys and
girls

Apologies I’ve just seen it’s a boys school

thatsnotmyslimfast · 04/09/2022 18:50

If they don’t allow him to tie it back (which I find odd), your only option is a haircut. You could go with the standard short back and sides with a fringe, but professional standards mean the fringe can’t go past his eyebrows. Or could be combed and gelled back or with a comb over. He could also get it cut into a bob length style and gel it back so it sits on the nape. That way it’s not covering his ears.

Professional standards mean above the ears, eyebrows and off the collar.

Good luck!
