Teen dd has UTI I think, going on residential tomorrow

This morning dd complained of pain when she wees. I suspected dehydration of some sort since she went on an all day hike yesterday.

I have bought cranberry juice and given her a sachet of Canesten cystitis relief remedy to ease the symptoms, but given her school trip is tomorrow and for a week, I am considering calling 111 if things don't get better by around 5ish.

Is there anything else I can do at this point? If they prescribe antibiotics, there won't be anywhere open that will dispense them today.

There is always an emergency Sunday pharmacy open, if you Google it will tell you the nearest one to you, although that still may involve a bit of a drive. There’s one 25 miles from me that’s open until 9pm tonight. Not ideal but always options when you are desperate.
However, ime out of hours generally say to contact GP in the morning and send a sample in for them to test, but it is still worth ringing them. I’d do it sooner rather than later.

I'd get advice long before 5pm! Is there a walk in centre/minor injuries unit near you? NHS 111 might get the oncall Dr to prescribe some. Don't you have a pharmacy or one within a supermarket open on a Sunday?

Unless the cranberry juice is pure- not cranberry drink, I wouldn't bother because its full of sugar. I know some people find benefit with cranberry tablets, but I thought the amount of sugar in those drinks could actually make things worse. Plenty of water will help.

I wouldn't wait until 5. You can always cancel if she improves. You might be waiting hours for a triage.

Thank you for your reply@SoS505 . I would definitely phone GP first thing in the morning if that was an option but she is due to be on a coach to France at 4:30am.

I will look up where the nearest late opening pharmacy is.

You can get antibiotics from an online GP and they dispense within the hour to your chosen pharmacy.
You would have to be quick though cos they generally stop taking orders around 5 or 6.
Cost around £15 then you pay for the drugs at the pharmacy.

Not sure if it is the same in the UK but Boots pharmacy do a UTI kit here (Ireland). Basically you buy the kit, do your sample in the container supplied. You dip a testing strip into the urine and then place it on a grid and take a photo. Upload the photo to the app and you get a text/email from GP saying whether you have an infection or not. In my case a prescription was back to the same boots pharmacy within twenty mins.

Admittedly, I have to pay to see my gp so not only was this kit much more time effficient but much cheaper. With the NHS it may not be the same

I meant phone out of hours sooner rather than later, but I was saying it’s them that generally say to send a sample to the GP in the morning. I know because I get all the samples!
I realise that to you it’s 111, to me it’s an out of hours as that’s what it says on the report that comes through to the patient notes. Sorry for the confusion.

I managed to get cystitis antibiotics from Superdrug online in lockdown. Maybe worth calling your nearest to see if they would supply over the counter.
or Lloyds chemist?

Cathpot · 10/07/2022 15:51

Out local Pharmacists can give antibiotics for cystitis without a test , just on symptoms- or certainly this was the system I used last year . I would go asap to nearest place, explain symptoms and get her on antibiotics today and she should be feeling much better by tomorrow. Then make sure she knows to finish the whole course.

Musicaltheatremum · 10/07/2022 16:12

Have to be over 16 for pharmacy to issue antibiotics.

SirVixofVixHall · 10/07/2022 17:17

You can get test strips from the pharmacy and do a dip to see if it is a UTI. Then see if she can be seen by OOH GP if antibiotics are needed.
