Can you paint a bathroom with normal wall paint?

Just that really. We are planning a proper renovation in 1-2 years. But want to smarten up the bathroom in the meantime. Can we get away with using ordinary wall paint for that period?

Yes, ordinary emulsion will work fine.

ItsSnowJokes · 09/07/2022 12:34

You can but bathroom paint will last longer. It has anti mold properties to protect from steam. It is also scrubable

Thanks!

Its best to use a kitchen and bathroom one I think, I used ordinary emulsion and its coming off the ceiling because of the steam

Elvira2000 · 09/07/2022 19:11

How long did it take before it started peeling?

Ours peeled/went mouldy within a year. Had it redone with bathroom paint and it's been sparkling ever since. Go with the bathroom paint!!

Beetr00t · 09/07/2022 20:36

Sorry within 6 months actually

YorkshireTeaCup · 09/07/2022 20:39

We moved into a house and the bathroom had been painted with non bathroom paint about 4 months previously. Within 6months it had flaked all around the window and there was a bit of mould starting to grow. 5 yrs on and we are just about to redecorate and finally redo all the paint 🙈

You do really need kitchen and bathroom paint - for steamy areas. ;Why would you plan not to? Leftover paint you want to use up?

Discovereads · 09/07/2022 21:16

No don’t use regular paint, use the kitchen/bathroom paint, it is formulated to withstand steam.

RandomQuest · 09/07/2022 21:17

Our bathroom is Farrow and Ball modern emulsion, same as the rest of the house. It’s been 2 years now and holding up fine, besides I don’t think F&B even make specific bathroom paint m.

I've used F&B Estate Emulsion on the walls, and some 'bathroom paint' on the ceiling (because I cba to repaint the ceiling if necessary). The F&B has in fact lasted extremely well. I haven't got any kind of extractor fan, but I do have the window open for about 9 months of the year, and insist that the DC open the window after a bath/shower in winter.

I meant to say my F&B has lasted 6 years thus far. Bathroom paint is horrible - it has a sort of sheen to it.

ladydoris · 09/07/2022 21:21

Please use bathroom paint. You don't much usually.

Changingmynameyetagain · 09/07/2022 21:46

We have regular dulux emulsion in our bathroom, it’s lasted 7 years perfectly, I’ve just repainted it to freshen it up and used the same paint. No mould or peeling but we leave the window open all year round and it has a decent extractor.

We have a shower room with no window and we used Zinsser anti mould paint on the advice of the plumber.
