Motion sickness

Quick question and wasn't sure to to ask it!

13 year old had an inset day today so went to a theme park which was his first real experience of massive rollercoasters. He loved them but now it's 11.30 and he has awful motion sickness, he is knackered but has said that every time he closes his eyes the room is spinning and he feels sick.

Are there any quick remedies or does he just need to wait for it to wear off? Would travel sickness tablets work? We have some Joy Rides..

Thanks!

Ginger is the only thing that works for me, it's better as a preventative than a cure but probably worth a try

No ginger in the house at the moment, I've got lemon and ginger tea but I'm guessing that's not the same?!

It sounds like it's triggered vertigo. Mine was called benign positional vertigo and I recall there are manoeuvres you can do to help reposition everything. I had it once, it was horrendous.

And yes to travel sickness tablets - worth a try.

Snozzlemaid · 08/07/2022 23:49

Yes sounds like vertigo. GP told me to take travel sickness pills so worth a try.
I feel for him, it's bloody awful.

Sorry, her.

My experience of motion sickness is that it happens at the time rather than hours after the event. Could he be having a bout of noro virus or similar? Rather than a type of delayed motion sickness. Assume he came off the roller coasters hours ago?

I get this - after a ferry journey I will feel like I'm bobbing up and down on the waves for ages afterwards - sometimes it's enough to make me fall over

ImHavingAnOldFriendForDinner · 08/07/2022 23:59

He says he feels like he's on a rollercoaster every time he shuts his eyes and feels really unbalanced even though he is laying down, it could be vertigo I guess. I've just given him 2 travel sickness tablets so will see if they help.

Thanks!

I've been to alton towers several times now and am usually ok on most rides, however I did stay over once and didn't drive home I was clinging onto the bed like I was drunk that night!
Can only think that due to usually driving home I can kind of reset my balance myself as I'm constantly looking at the horizon and concentrating and only feel a bit sickly for the first couple of minutes.
Does he get car sick at all? That's not going to help, especially if on a coach for the way home. I can drive for hours but only a few minutes in a car.
Definitely try a travel sickness tablet but hopefully it will wear of in the night

ImHavingAnOldFriendForDinner · 09/07/2022 00:23

@Ollybob he does get travel sick in cars, he can't look at his phone or read a book. It was a shuttle bus and then a train home plus it was SO hot today which wouldn't have helped. Hoping he can fall asleep soon and wake up feeling better.

Awful feeling.
If it persists, these are the exercises, called Brandt-Daroff. Lots of info online.

Get him to sleep with one leg out of the duvet on the floor. It will hopefully help him feel grounded and stop the spinning.

I also visualise the spinning as a giant ball in my head and then visualise someone pushing up against the ball to stop it spinning.

Motion sickness tablets may also work.

It sounds strange, but try when lying down keeping one foot on the ground.

I get the worst motion sickness but I love boats/roller coasters/etc. The only way I can bear it is medication before I do the activity. Even then, I'll feel everything moving for a few days.
