How much uniform (secondary school)

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/07/2022 16:19

I was planning...
1 blazer
2 kilts
1 tie
1 PE kit

But chatting to friends, most seem to be buying 2 blazers for example.

I can wash overnight if necessary. Will get 5 blouses, tights etc separately.

Have I completely underestimated Yr7s, or will that be sufficient?
(The uniform is reasonably priced, that lot will about £120ish. Extra blazer will be another £25, kilts are £27)

Many dc. They have never had more than 1 blazer per year...

Makinglists · 08/07/2022 16:24

1 blazer - most of them are so synthetic they will dry overnight. I only washed every half term (unless obviously dirty)- perhaps I'm scummy?!. They keep so many bits in the pockets they hate it when you wash it and have to remove all the rubbish.

itsgettingweird · 08/07/2022 16:25

We only ever had 1 blazer at a time.

Ds only had 2 the whole way through secondary in total!

Definitely only one blazer. I only bought one PE kit and I think an extra t-shirt and shorts would have been good (PE three times a week). I’ve had to wash it a lot!

creamcheeseandlox · 08/07/2022 16:27

Yep 1 blazer. My DD is going into year 9 in September and has only just grown out of her first blazer. They wash and dry well so that can be fine overnight if needed. She also has 2 skirts, 2 jumpers, 1 tie, 5 shirts and one lot of pe kit.

Decafflatteplease · 08/07/2022 16:28

We get...

1 blazer
3 trousers
2 jumpers
5 shirts
2 ties as with just 1 dc were running round on a Mon morning trying to find said tie. So much easier with 2.

Plus pe kit which changes with the season and activities

RavenousBugblatter · 08/07/2022 16:29

For the last year, DS has had:
1 blazer
6 short sleeved shirts (3 2 packs)
1 tie
4 trousers (2 2 packs)
2 PE kits

But I want to get him another tie as he seems to draw on it sometimes.

I suppose it depends when you do certain washes, e.g. I only do one white wash per week, but I tend to do a couple of dark washes.

LeafHunter · 08/07/2022 16:30

1 blazer and 1 kilt. The kilts at y7 never fully fit by y11 because the girls are different shapes so I’d only get one. I’d also do less than 5 shirts if Washing is done during the week. You only need five if it’s only done at weekends.

LetMeInYourWindow · 08/07/2022 16:31

1 blazer
2 jumpers
3 trousers
5 shirts
1 tie
1 long sleeve p.e top
1 short sleeve p.e top
1 pair p.e socks
1 pair p.e shorts.

Hi OP,
My DC is starting in September and school seems pretty strict. DC is very scatter brained! I'm going to get a spare tie for when one is inevitably misplaced.
Where I live we have a service called FUSS which provides free uniforms for secondary school. I wasn't planning to use it as we can afford new, but I heard a lady speak about how it was very much for everyone, from a recycling point of view as much as affordability. I thought I might enquire if they had a stock of blazers. I wouldn't want to take one from someone who would need it but they gave the impression that they get more in than they give out. Anyway, I might get another blazer from there. I will give any uniform that's suitable to them when it no longer fits.

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 08/07/2022 16:31

We don't have blazers but we have five jumpers, five trousers and six shirts. Two PE kits.
I can't be doing with washing stuff during the week. Luckily the younger one mainly has the hand me downs.

Sirzy · 08/07/2022 16:31

We get given one blazer tie and pe kit when they start. I added two pairs of trousers and 5 shirts and it’s been fine

RavenousBugblatter · 08/07/2022 16:36

Yes, it's definitely worth trying to get some secondhand uniform on FB marketplace or through a local recycling scheme if there is one - DS's school offers one in partnership with a local organisation. We've had a blazer and some PE kit through this.

zoomstyle · 08/07/2022 16:36

1 blazer, 2 kilts is fine.

But 2 PE kits as only one was a pain - DS would forget to put it in the wash, or I'd forget to put it on. Much easier now we have two and I can make sure we have sufficient uniform ar the beginning of the week.

5 shirts.

It's also worth having a spare tie just in case of emergencies. You may not need it for a year - or ever! But if the original gets lost / stained / torn it saves a lot of fuss!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/07/2022 16:37

I was getting 5 blouses as I only wash them (with her younger sisters) once a week

No jumpers in the uniform

Was considering an extra tie, weve had a few stresses this last year over those!

I'll see how easy it is to get extra PE kit after they start, the shop is 45 min drive (20 miles) away... why they use one so far away is a mystery!

KarrotKake · 08/07/2022 16:43

We have 2 sets of PE kit, so we know the washing basket needs to be empty at the end if the weekend, but otherwise we're OK.

2 ties.

A weeks worth of trousers and shirts. One jumper.

We started off on one blazer, then picked up a second hand one for about £5. Ours doesn't dry overnight, even tho it's synthetic - well, it probably would in this weather, but not in mid winter.

Pascha · 08/07/2022 16:52

I'm going for 1 blazer, 5 shirts, 2 trousers, 1 of each pe kit (indoor and outdoor), 1 tie.

Ds1 is generally good at keeping stuff in good nick. He only has 1 jumper now and never loses it. I might order next size up shirts and trouser to keep in reserve.

ILIWYS · 08/07/2022 17:50

What you suggest sounds perfect OP. Definitely don't need 2 blazers. We have 2 ties as bizarrely DD seems to manage to get them dirty.

DontCallMeBaby · 08/07/2022 17:56

One blazer was fine. DD also made it through much of school with one skirt as I refused to fix the zip on the top-small one, and she refused to wear the bigger ones. She eventually ripped the remaining skirt from waistband to (very short) hem and sewed it back together herself. She hasn’t seen anything else since.
