Had a weird 'episode' last night...

Was in bed and had been fast asleep for maybe an hour when I woke myself (and DP) up by my arm shaking violently, followed by the rest of my body. He held me tight and got me to slow my breathing down and it stopped after maybe 90 seconds.

It was the weirdest sensation, like the most violent shivering, but obviously not cold. No idea what caused it. Has anybody ever experienced anything like this? It was very disconcerting.

Not myself but my 38 year old daughter has night panics. She can wake up and her room is full of birds. She is terrified of them.

I mean, I've been under a fair bit of stress recently but it's been worse. Didn't realise you could have a panic attack in your sleep, that must be very scary for her

You need to talk to your GP about this. It might have been a seizure.

I've had similar in the past but either when I was ill, or after having the dcs, when my milk was coming in, and the bizarrely, a week after stopping bfing.

If you don't feel unwell, and have no massive hormonal changes going on I'd maybe put it down to stress if it's a one off but get it checked if it happens again.

Is rule out seizure. I have terrible anxiety at the mo and I’m waking with with my heart pounding. I’ve never experienced anything like you mention. Have you had headaches or any other waking symptoms? It must be so comforting that your DP was beside you.

I totally agree with this

Get on to your GP

I had something very like that a couple of years ago. Described it to a sister (NHS) who said it sounded like Rigor. Body fighting to raise temperature to combat infection.

I wondered if it was covid. Felt fine after a hour or so, though v tired.

BMW6 · 08/07/2022 11:24

Meant to add, mine came in waves a few seconds apart, like an earthquake radiating outwards from inside my torso. Shaking so violently I couldn't hold a glass of water.

I had it a few days after birth as well. Midwife said they used to call it milk fever. So I agree maybe hormones OP?

keeprunningupthathill · 08/07/2022 11:31

I had this four days after a c section and I've often wondered what it was, I thought delayed shock but maybe it was milk coming in!

itsgettingweird · 08/07/2022 11:42

My ds use to do this.

He was tested for epilepsy.

In his case it's a rare neurological muscular condition but I wouldn't be leaving it.

thisisit77 · 08/07/2022 11:43

I have this when I have a panic attack

ZealAndArdour · 08/07/2022 11:47

It could have been a rigour - the brain forcing you to shiver violently to expel heat to cool itself down - happens when high fevers sometimes.

Or some kind of focal seizure or other focal neurology.

If you’re not unwell with anything that would explain a fever then I’d speak to your GP asap.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 08/07/2022 15:11

My son has just had similar and then tested positive for Covid. He did have a high temp when he woke in the morning (brought down with paracetamol).

ABrotherWhoLooksLikeHellMugYou · 18/07/2022 18:15

Had it again the other night. Always happens just after I fall asleep. DP wondered if it might be an extreme version of the startle reflex type thing...

That’s interesting. I had a shaking episode after someone had woken me up when I was coming down with Covid. Couldn’t control it, I wasn’t cold, just couldn’t stop shaking.

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 18/07/2022 18:32

If you are not ill (no temperature or other signs of fever/illness/sepsis) it might be a seizure (they can just affect part of your body -and some types only happen at a certain point in the sleep cycle). It is certainly important to check this out. (Treatable - but dangerous to leave untreated.)

Go to your GP not the internet.
