Beginner's guide to the gym

I've recently joined and feel self conscious and terrified! What should I do, how do I start?
I don't want an induction, I can't stand gym instructors!

Can you get a session with a PT? They can be helpful one on one with training and it would help you with further visits

Don't be worried about an induction it's very useful to learn the machines and how to use them properly.

Will you be allowed to use the equipment without an induction? They're useful as they break the ice with staff if you ever need anything. They can introduce you to new exercises that you might not have considered before.

Try to remember that most people feel self conscious, especially at the start. Use equipment that you enjoy and feel comfortable with. Don't push yourself too hard in the beginning stages.

I thought most gyms require an induction as part of their insurance.
My gym the guy not only showed me how to use the equipment but wrote up a routine for me to follow and I had a chart to track progress.
A few sessions with a PT also worthwhile. They'll discuss your goals and start you off. Try a few classes too. Core training is important so try pilates.

No don't have to have one, they are all young and I feel odd. I did have a session booked with pt but he cancelled it and I asked to rearrange but not had a reply.

Before I cancelled my membership- finances, I had an induction and took photos of all machines, their name and reps, positions of machine seats etc.
stored them all in my phone notes, so that I could see what each machine did when I inevitability forgot.
I would add any new exercises in there on my workout note as I found it helped me ‘save face’ when I felt like I didn’t know what I was doing.
Thats a long way to say, push yourself for one session with PT or induction then you can leave it and build your own knowledge.
