What's a really great UK seaside city or large town to live in?

LAHallucinations · 07/07/2022 23:19

As the title says really. I've lived in a small town in the Home Counties all my life and I'd like to move to the coast within the next year. The trouble is I have very few restrictions/criteria for where I could move, so I'm struggling with very bad choice paralysis. Whenever I do find somewhere I think would suit me, I search for threads about the place on here, and inevitably they'll be a handful of comments saying what a shithole that place is, which just sends me back to square one (even if most other comments are very positive).

So no negativity please, just places that you think are really good to live in.

The only essentials are:

  • Must be by the coast (doesn't need to have a sandy beach, just some good coastal walks)

  • Must be a big town or a city (I don't drive so I want everything nearby and plenty of things to do/opportunities to meet new people)

  • Mustn't be somewhere really 'rough' or rundown

I work from home, I don't have children, and I have a large budget, so none of those things are an issue.

Where would you recommend?

Yes, Southsea.
I often think about returning to live there but it would be practical at the moment.

Some of the suggestions given really aren’t suitable for someone who doesn’t drive. What use is the coast being 30 minutes drive away?

OP I’d go either North West (Liverpool area) or North East (Tynemouth/Whitley Bay/Cullercoats to be right on the coast - or in Newcastle itself where you will be at the coast by public transport in less than half an hour).

WITL · 08/07/2022 07:17

Liverpool or Brighton

user3572 · 08/07/2022 07:19

Another vote for Southsea - all the reasons listed already.

fuckboris · 08/07/2022 07:19

Southsea or Old Portsmouth.

Iamnotamermaid · 08/07/2022 07:20

Exeter, Brighton, Edinburgh

Formby or Lytham St Annes

I second this, and would recommend Lytham rather than St Anne's if you have the budget.

Liverpool is very accessible from Formby and and Lytham to Manchester is really easy by train.

Portobello (Edinburgh is very short bus journey) and place itself has lots of nice shops, cafes etc. The coastal walk is really nice.

Another vote here for Lytham St. Anne's, really lovely high street, walks by the beach, and easy transport links to other nearby cities.

Two high streets, Lytham and St Anne's run into each other but each has its own little town centre.

Poole. It has a fabulous harbour. It's beach runs from Sandbanks into Bournemouth, which runs into Boscombe, which runs into Christchurch. You can get a bus from Poole to almost anywhere. You can get the short local ferry crossing - at Sandbanks - over to the Isle of Putbeck - which a bus also uses - which then opens up amazing walks on the Purbeck peninsular.

It also opens up Swanage (my very favourite seaside town, as that is where we holidayed when I was a child), Corfe Castle, and stunning cliff walks to the west of Swanage Bay, which on sunny days has sea views and craggy rocks (and caves) that rival, or IMO surpass views of the Mediterranean!

The trains from Poole can take you West to Wareham and Weymouth & Portland, and beyond. The trains going East pass through Bournemouth, Southampton, and on to London. More local trains will stop at lots of places along the route. I once, when my children were little - one only a young baby - went by train from Poole to the New Forest with my DMum and DChildren (sorry I can't remember if we had to do a change or not between Poole and the New Forest), then at Brockenhurst in the New Forest, we changed trains to the ferry on the coast (sorry can't remember the name of the place, but it wasn't far), and then from the ferry we went to the Isle of Wight.

We stayed on a caravan site, and went all around the Island on buses, and had a brilliant week long holiday, then reversed the route back to Poole, and even with small children and all the baby's luggage it was a very easy journey; but I have to add here that I could not have managed it without my extremely Dear Mum, who is now very sadly departed.

The Dorset Coast has miles and miles of sandy beaches, but also dramatic cliff faces, and so many choices of lifestyle, that I can't imagine you ever being bored, whether you want those stunning walks, shopping until you drop, theatres, nightlife, busy or secluded beach time... I really can't think of any negatives except that I and my nearest and dearest don't live there anymore. If I won millions of pounds I would be moving back there immediately, and enticing all of my loved ones to do so too - I don't think they would need much encouragement!

Edinburgh m, if I could afford to live there I would.

Hadenoughofbloodycovid · 08/07/2022 07:36

Yes definitely Edinburgh, some beautiful properties in portobello.

trevthecat · 08/07/2022 07:37

I grew up in lytham St Anne's, specifically Lytham. They are two separate towns, both very different. St annes is more victorian seaside town with the pier, beach huts, outdoor paddling pool. Lytham is more 'posh' lots of bars, independent shops. Both have lovely beaches, good train links, lots to do. If budget allows I would live in lytham, we moved 6 years ago but I lived near the town centre and just loved to stroll through town on my way to work, see all the shops setting up, all the flowers outside shops, getting a coffee. Can you tell I miss it!

HappyMeal564 · 08/07/2022 07:38

Bournemouth, just don't move to Boscombe

overmydeadbody · 08/07/2022 07:41

Southbourne in Bournemouth. I live a five minute walk from beautiful sandy beaches and can walk/cycle to any shop I need. Lovely community atmosphere and has a bit of grit to it too. The beach is truly beautiful.

Tillymintxx · 08/07/2022 07:41

I second the Wirral. Easy access to the country side, close to Liverpool and Chester. There is quite a lot to see and do on the Wirral Peninsula

daffodilandtulip · 08/07/2022 07:42

Devon. Near Exeter for your big town. Both Coastal Walks and National Park.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 08/07/2022 07:48

I would say Edinburgh or Brighton. I’ve lived in both (currently in Edinburgh). The public transport in both is good; I would say excellent in Edinburgh. The buses are great for getting around.

AngelinaFibres · 08/07/2022 07:52

If my situation was your situation I would buy a lovely house in Lyme Regis. Absolutely beautiful place

overmydeadbody · 08/07/2022 07:53

Boscombe is up and coming, and the school is really good actually. It's not that bad!

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 08/07/2022 07:54

Brighton is an absolute shithole with unpleasant people. Please don't move there. The day I left was the happiest day in my life.

Laska2Meryls · 08/07/2022 07:55

Ryde.. yes its a small town , but lively in itself with an arty scene, cafes and restaurants , huge sandy beach when tides out.... Loads of fantastic walks, beaches , good bus service all over the island and a train .
14 mins hovercraft to Southsea or 20 mins fast jet to Portsmouth ( with ongoing trains to London, Chichester Southampton etc ).

yankeecandlesarebest · 08/07/2022 07:57

Poole- absolutely gorgeous.

Professionallytorn · 08/07/2022 07:57

Edinburgh has it all, excellent transport links of all kinds, plenty to do, beach, lovely walks, and a lovely buzz to it. My dream place to relocate to ...

Laska2Meryls · 08/07/2022 08:00

Or Lymington, on the coast, In the New Forest, trains to Southampton and up to London , (via Winchester, which is also a great town with lots going on , but not on the coast of course .. )
Ferry to the IOW for even more good walks and beaches
