Has anyone painted their garden fence black?

I have a small side garden, enclosed by the house on one side, 6 foot panels on other 3 sides. Lots of colourful plants. Black seems to be a trendy colour for fencing, looks good on Pinterest but not sure I’m actually brave enough to buy the paint and start it.
Anyone painted fencing black? Happy with it? Any other suggestions welcome.

Not black but dark green, love it, makes the flowers and other greens stand out and 'pop' (so many shades of green in the garden!), would imagine black would do the same. Wouldn't go back to a light colour now.

I read somewhere that 0.75 black 0.25 green paint mix is the best colour for showing off plants

Yes, and my decking. Looks fab

Just make sure they are all your fence panels before you paint them.

trulyconfuseddotcom · 07/07/2022 18:17

Do any neighbours have the 'other' side facing them? Just to say that dark colours can be quite prone to leaking through to the other side and looking very bad.

FamilyGredunza · 07/07/2022 18:17

Yes it looks amazing but my god the amount of bird shit that it shows up is shocking.
I now have to go outside to clean off the fence a couple of times a week! I'm sure my neighbours think I'm weird.

AlisonDonut · 07/07/2022 18:18

I'm a bit fan of black in gardens, it really makes everything look great.

Poppins2016 · 07/07/2022 18:18

I haven't, but I'd consider it. Well, I'd actually consider a dark charcoal grey (a little less 'in your face' than true black).

You'll need to paint sparingly in order to eliminate any bleeding through the fence to the neighbours side, otherwise it'll look awful for them (that's assuming you're not painting both sides).

Itsagrandoldteam · 07/07/2022 18:18

Yes, my neighbour has and it looks great. We tried to paint our brown fence black and it didn't really work, just looks dark brown. Neighbours fence hadn't been painted so it took really well.

littlematchstickgirl · 07/07/2022 18:18

I did, it looks fantastic behind the plants. I was worried it would be too much, but it looks so much better. Take before and after pictures, so you can marvel :-)

TheAverageUser · 07/07/2022 18:20

Yes me, it's brilliant but consider upkeep and like a pp said the bird poop showing up 😁

TheChosenTwo · 07/07/2022 18:20

My brother did and it looked great however as a pp mentioned, bird shit is often streaked/splattered up and down it which just draws attention to itself for the wrong reasons!
Makes the plants and flowers and general garden greenery look so vibrant though, they are happy to overlook it.

beachcomber70 · 07/07/2022 18:52

My fence is black and it makes the plants in front pop out. I love it and wish I'd done it years ago.

theemmadilemma · 07/07/2022 18:57

I had brown so dark it was close to black and I adored it! The plants pop so much in front of it!!

DisforDarkChocolate · 07/07/2022 18:57

Our neighbours have and it looks shite.

easyday · 07/07/2022 19:33

Yes I do. It looks great and the fence sort of disappears. Really offsets the green nicely.
But be very very careful painting it otherwise you'll be posting about your irate neighbour... and if it's their fence you MUST ask permission.

easyday · 07/07/2022 19:34

Took three coats to look good though - patchy is awful.

Maytodecember · 07/07/2022 19:47

Thanks everyone — all the fences involved are mine and I’ll start with the ones I have easy access to for both sides. I

our neighbours have black fence panels. They’ve had them twice - the first time, they painted the existing panels, which were quite tatty (trellis falling off, some difference in heights). It didn’t look good. And then they had new fence panels put in, which they then painted a dark grey. Now those look amazing, so I think a fence in good condition painted black would look loads better than a fence in poor condition painted black.

I would be concerned about the colour bleeding, it I think it would look amazing. Maybe a dark grey would be more forgiving of the bird poo?

I would love to do ours, yg they’re covered in green algae which would need to be scrubbed off before I even started and that’s too much of a job for my liking.

Also easier to do in winter when deciduous plants have lost leaves?

swimlyn · 08/07/2022 00:29

RedDiamond · 07/07/2022 18:16

Just make sure they are all your fence panels before you paint them.

Black does ‘set off’ colours stunningly. Just be 100% sure that all of the panels are yours. It’s quite unusual for ALL fence panels to be one owner.

Over the years we’ve had two brand new fences ruined by neighbours. They both chose black for our beautiful new chestnut panels.

The second one made sure to ruin it with massive runs by spraying it thoroughly. Twice.

swimlyn · 08/07/2022 00:33

@WellTidy

The green algae usually comes off quite easily with a pressure washer, even on the low setting.

After that it’ll need a couple of days to thoroughly dry.
