Sh!t.. holiday cancellation

Inthefirepit · 07/07/2022 17:40

We booked a TUI package holiday, we paid a large deposit and since had a baby (baby was added), baby is now 7mo and has severe allergies, dr doesn’t want us to go before seeing allergy team and dermatologist (dc can’t wear suncream due to severe allergies) referrals have been made but won’t be seen before holiday.

Baby has been in and out of hospital, blue lighted, I’m talking turned blue in my arms reactions.

TUI has said we can’t get refund on the large deposit because the flights were outsourced due to them not being able to provide them, they’ve said their policy with third party flights cannot be refunded 😔

We always buy our travel insurance in the weeks before going, so don’t have travel insurance 😢 is there anything we can do? Or just put it down to us being stupid for not getting insurance when we booked it last year.

I have a Nationwide Flex Plus account. £13 per month, covers all holidays, all mobile phones in the family and European car recovery.

Prior to this I was paying £129 for annual travel insurance and about £80 for green flag recovery. I had no mobile insurance.

It's so far got DH a new phone when it was dropped, covered a skiing holiday at the start of COVID, and rescued our car when we were stuck in Geneva.

As its constant, it doesn't need renewing (or remembering!) and is there for all holidays including UK ones!

antelopevalley · 07/07/2022 20:44

@Ottersmith you can always rely on MNers to be compassionate.

Marsoupial · 07/07/2022 20:44

@bellac11 there's a few that do it - google and then call rather than going through the online form (google your specific wait list / diagnosis / consultant).

If you have something like Asthma than the charities often have a list of providers who will cover that as well (including hwen you are waiting for tests / have been in hospital recently)

Think we have World Nomads this time.

antelopevalley · 07/07/2022 20:46

The insurance with bank accounts do not cover you if you have pre-existing conditions unless you have declared them. They work best for fit healthy people.

LIZS · 07/07/2022 20:47

Dh has option to get annual travel insurance via work. It limits what it covers for him due to ongoing health issues but is worth it for me.

I went through countless firms, many recommended on here in the thread. I rang a few of them.

What would you google, as I googled a plethora of search terms with the gist of travel insurance with undiagnosed conditions.

I have 11 conditions on my insurance, none of them are problematic, but they are all diagnosed and not 'under investigation', none of them stopped me getting insurance or even seem to have put the insurance up but they may have, who knows, but not having a diagnosis was a huge no no, there was no where I found that would give me the insurance with that.

Leftbutcameback · 07/07/2022 20:49

I have a lung

Leftbutcameback · 07/07/2022 20:50

Dammit! Clearly posted too soon. Lung condition and use Allclear for travel insurance when I'm having issues with it (investigations / treatment)

Izzieloo · 07/07/2022 20:52

Just ring TUI up they can waive the fee , depends who you get . TUI are cancelling so many holidays at the moment anyway . Their customer service is shocking but depends who you get .

antelopevalley · 07/07/2022 20:53

If you do not have a diagnosis, you are unlikely to get travel insurance because the firm can not calculate the risks. At the most they will cover you but exclude anything at all connected to what you may have.

Do you have a diagnosis?

I think people are muddling up existing conditions and something that has not yet been diagnosed.

When I was investigating this I found they wont insure you at all, because they cant distinguish between something you might already have and whether that undiagnosed 'thing' you might have might be connected to a pre exisiting condition or not, so they wouldnt cover for any conditions

it literally took me months to work through this by that time I got the diagnosis!!! Was only waiting for the bloody appointment and some blood tests to get done!

I should add its horribly boring, rhinitis, nothing dramatic.

antelopevalley · 07/07/2022 21:00

@bellac11 that is really annoying.

Moonshine160 · 07/07/2022 21:06

What does your original email confirmation say? Have TUI outsourced their flights to another company after you booked the package holiday? If so it might be worth raising this to see if they will be lenient in changing the flights for you. Otherwise, if nothing has been changed by TUI from what you originally booked then I don’t think you’ve got a leg to stand on without insurance.

Clarefromwork · 07/07/2022 21:06

I’m the same and sometimes book my travel insurance the night before, I also thought everyone did this!

Hope you get it sorted and also hope you get good news about your baby’s allergies.

Isaidno22 · 07/07/2022 21:18

You might not get insurance cover as your dr has advised against going.

Marsoupial · 07/07/2022 21:19

@bellac11 No, we are not muddling things up - clearly you didn't go to the right places for the right conditions / investigations.

I'm sorry you found it impossible but really it is not at all impossible - it just takes time - and knowing who to contact (via knowing who to contact).

Lots of companies insure people who are under investigation - you can see that within the first pages of a google search.

Floralnomad · 07/07/2022 21:23

Would it be possible for one of you to go with a parent / sibling / friend and the other children . Hope the baby gets diagnosed / treated soon .

So I asked you what the google search was, what was the search term?

I need to know this because I have other conditions which I have put off going to the gp about which will need investigation because I will need insurance ongoing.

I also looked at Worlds Nomad, no where does it specify it covers undiagnosed conditions, where does it say this?

Sorry that's not true. You certainly can as I and others like me have.

You need to go to the right insurers and speak to someone on the 'phone.

Who is your insurance with?

ChateauMargaux · 07/07/2022 21:28

I am sorry you are in this situation OP. Allergies are very difficult, especially when your baby is very young and neither you nor the medical staff around you know what you are dealing with. Having. your baby turn blue in your arms is traumatising and terrifying, let alone have that happen many times. You can pop over to the allergy board for support. I completely understand the fear around taking your precious delicate over reactive, one in a million being, out of the house..

3luckystars · 07/07/2022 21:30

I think that is really lousy. I would keep asking them to postpone it until next year and hope for the best.
