Pain in big toe

Weirdest thing ever

I recently started playing a grass-pitch based team sport (think football but doesn't require kicking - for those that know it, its hurling in ireland). I need to wear football boots, so went and bought a fairly cheap pair - this is a bunch of 40-year-old women playing for fun & exercise, not anything competitive. The boots fit me fairly well, they're a bit narrow, but ok. Ground we're playing on it very hard. i'm in pain now more & more often after each session, in my left big toe. The boots are long enough, toe is not hitting the end, but they are a bit tight. the toe isn't bruised or swollen, but difficult to put wieght on the day after, recivers after a few days

Really enjoying this sport, so don't want to give up - wonder do i need to invest in a better pair of boots ? Anyone (or maybe more likely - anyone's kids ) have this before?

Is the pain in the top of your toe? If so it sounds like it could be tendonitis

As the parent of a professionally trained ballet dancer, I'd say that yes, you do need to invest in footwear that fits you really well, and allows your foot to move correctly. I suspect the current culprit is the slight narrowness around that area.

Buy better boots. You could cause permanent damage by wearing too tight shoes from ingrowing toenails, bunions, crossed over toes, nerve damage etc etc.
the fact that the day after wearing them you find it difficult to put weight on that toe but still continue to wear them is crazy! Your feet are really important. Look after them!

Turf toe? Sure that's a thing I've heard of. Would make sense.

I have arthritis in my toe and my toe joint is stiff and doesn't move as much as it should. (Hallux limitus and has formed a dorsal bunion)

Orthotics might help. GP prescribed naproxen. Ask for a podiatrist referral.

Yeah you all are right, I need to to sort this - it's been kind of gradually creeping up on me!

Looked up turf toe, sounds like it could be that - never heard of that before. Going to look for new boots with a more rigid sole, and better padding under the foot - the ones I have are really light. Seeing that maybe taping up the toe might help too.

Occam's razor and all that, but yes, I'd be buying some new football boots that fit properly.
