www.girlsbrigadeministries.org.uk/

They have a website...

Spencerfig · 07/07/2022 13:28

Yes I had a look just hoping for personal experience or people who already have their girls in the organisation

I was in the Church Lads and Church Girls brigade when I was young... i used to love it. I wonder if it is part of that?

youngestisapsycho · 07/07/2022 13:31

Looks much similar to Brownies/Guides?

chipsandpeas · 07/07/2022 13:32

from memory it was very similar to brownies/guides but with a little bit more emphasis on the bible
but that was over 30 years ago maybe its a bit different

HerbErtlinger · 07/07/2022 13:33

My DD used to attend. Lots of arts and crafts. A lot related to the Bible and although we're not a religious family, she enjoyed it. Games, working towards badges, cooking, trips out. She attended some church parades. It was a nice little group and she had fun

My dd is 8 and has been in GB since she was 5. They do various activities - crafts, sports, games, cooking, music, dance. They work towards various badges each term which are themed. Things like friendship, the environment, nature, etc.
She loves it. There are about 40 girls in her company. GB is a Christian organisation so there will be some elements of prayer and stories linked to the Bible. She also has church parade once a month.

My niece and nephew did Girls/Boys Brigade. Basically similar to Guides/Scouts but more church based as it's a church organisation so I think some activities took place on Sundays as part of the Sunday church service
How did your daughter get offered a place if you don't know much about it ?

Yes, we had a church parade monthly. It was a religious group but was easy going... the religion was not pushed on you. We had fantastic summer camps in the Isle of Wight! I have many happy memories of being a member.

I added her name to the wait list for girls brigade & scouts & we got a text to say she has a spot in girls brigade in September if she wants it. We are Christians (catholics) so the bible teaching is fine with us & dd will enjoy.

It's similar to Brownies/Guides but with a few Bible stories. They do quite a bit of craft, PE (dancing etc), baking and that kind of thing. You might find that she comes home with craft items like a Noah's Ark or something like that, or things with Bible verses on, but it's very "light" on "religion".

My DD goes and loves it. She gets a chance to do loads of activities that we wouldn't do at home. The company she goes to has 1 church parade each year (in September), plus Remembrance Day, and I think that's fairly standard around here.

Natsku · 07/07/2022 13:47

I did it when I was a child, I remember a lot of time spent playing games and quite a bit of crafts. Not much in the way of exciting things like scouts, and there was quite a bit of religion (though perhaps that has toned down over the years). I'd opt for Scouts but if you're unlikely to get a Scouts spot any time soon and you're already a religious family then go for it.

Needmorelego · 07/07/2022 14:55

@Spencerfig hopefully she will enjoy it.
My niece and nephew's groups have sadly fizzled out and gone because the leaders got old and retired (or sadly passed away) and most of the children aged-out.
A lot of people don't realise Girls/Boys Brigade still exists so it's nice if groups can keep going.

Spencerfig · 07/07/2022 15:30

Thanks everyone, scouts was our first preference but we are told we will definitely not get a place this September & probably not September 2023 either as the list is too large & they don't have enough volunteers (I have said I'll be happy to volunteer)
The Girls Brigade have a place for her & the Christian element is absolutely fine, she already attends a faith school ( Catholic)
