Who still has net curtains?!

Ffs trying to peer into the windows at number 10 and finding the net curtains infuriating! Would love to see the flapping going on behind them 😂
Does anyone know if they just look into the lobby area? Are there screens behind the nets? Can anyone look out of the windows?

Me, I have net curtains! They came with the house when we bought it. They're your classic, filthy nets. But our house is directly onto the pavement on a busy road with a lot of traffic (and foot traffic) so wouldn't be without them!

Cranklanky · 07/07/2022 14:19

Opposite for me. They were considered a bit naff, vulgar and surburban. Definitely non - u.

takeitandleaveit · 07/07/2022 14:19

We do, at the front. We have a very large living room window and we'd be on show to the entire neighbourhood otherwise.

TimBoothseyes · 07/07/2022 14:33

I have voile curtains not nets. I live in a bungalow and can't have a boundary fence up (rented from HA, their rules). Without those curtains there would be absolutely no privacy.

What's wrong with net curtains??

Everything!

rainbowandglitter · 07/07/2022 09:41

No. Do they even exist anymore? I've not noticed any for ages now I come to think about it.

Off topic I know but something else I’ve not seen in ages is a roundabout planted with flowers.

rodham · 07/07/2022 14:42

We do, but only because we've recently moved in and inherited the nets. House opens up onto the pavement so need something for privacy, but will be getting blinds in time.

Laiste · 07/07/2022 15:01

I do on some on some of our windows. Plain white voile only, triple width gathered.

One is on the little downstairs loo window because it's near the front door and you feel a bit exposed otherwise.

Second one is at the window the other side of the front door so that it matches the loo one. (i like symmetry)

Thirdly we have massive almost floor to ceiling georgian sash windows at the front and one of them is close to the slope wveryone has to walk up to get to the front door and they tend to peer in. Can't afford blinds for these windows yet, so plain nets it is.

What is the difference between plain nets and voile apart from price

Ted27 · 07/07/2022 17:23

voile is a higher quality, woven fabric, silkier, more ‘ flowly’

the voiles I have in my bedroom are very different to the lace curtains I have downstairs. I’m sure many people would call those nets, but they are very different quality to the ones I grew up with at home in my mum and nan’s houses.

Sarah2891 · 07/07/2022 17:27

Yes we have them in the bedrooms otherwise people would be able to see in.

Ted27 · 07/07/2022 17:27

@User74936782

think those billowy, flimsy bits of fabric in over the top music videos.
those would be voile, my lace (or net) curtains don’t billow like that, the voiles do

Ladywiddio · 07/07/2022 17:30

I have one in my en-suite,it faces the road.I don’t like it but can’t be arsed to get a blind.

Depends on how much money you want to spend. The cheaper ones, there’s not a huge amount of difference in quality. The expensive ones are vastly better quality, they hang nicer, they stay brighter longer and you can get them with weighted hems.

User74936782 · 07/07/2022 19:00

I just looked on JL and the net I have got is called voile but it was quite cheap, about £4 a metre, hem looks weighted.

I have net curtains because I want privacy.

Me too.

ThreeKneeRepeater · 07/07/2022 19:32

Haha so much snobbery about ‘voile’ !

MegaClutterSlut · 07/07/2022 19:38

Only the one, on the front room window. We live on a main road with where lots of nosy bastards people walk past 😁tbf I nose a lot too 😊

Darbs76 · 07/07/2022 19:42

I don’t, we have blinds plus windows with the diamond shapes on (not sure what you even call that) but we don’t have a huge amount of people walk past. I resisted them for years when we lived in a terrace but ended up getting some downstairs as the neighbours would literally stare right in when walking past. If you live near a main road or your house is close to a footpath then I think it’s good to have nets. People have opinions on them but who cares.

Bouledeneige · 07/07/2022 19:46

I don't mind voiles or muslins but I don't have any. I have flat muslin panels in my bay bedroom window.

NuNameNuMe · 07/07/2022 19:48

Me. How can you judge the neighbours if you haven't got a net to twitch.

Ted27 · 07/07/2022 19:57

@ThreeKneeRepeater

not really, they are 2 different things, I have both voiles and traditional net curtains. they look and feel completely different

to be technical about it - the nice people at Hillarys explain it - nets are knitted, voiles are woven, giving a differenf finish

PinkArt · 07/07/2022 20:05

The nets either side of the door are only shielding an entry area/ foyer from view. I've been there once and it's where there was a coat check area and where phones are taken from you.

ConfusedParticle · 07/07/2022 20:12

I let DH worry about such fripperies.

ConfusedParticle · 07/07/2022 20:15

Tbh nets make it easier to spy on neighbours. Anyone can see you peeping thru a slat or pulling a drape back. If we use nets we can at least see who is at the door without having to answer it.
This isn't a problem for me as I recently solved the cost of living crisis by purchasing a yurt.
